What are the benefits of joining e-gold?

Ever since I have been earning money online, I have always heard of this e-gold. I know some sites even payout by e-gold and that e-gold is some people's only way of receiving payments. What exactly is this e-gold? Does it translate back to cash if you do receive the e-gold and want to withdraw from it? Is there any benefits of joining e-gold over paypal? Would you recommend me joining e-gold?
I will probably go ahead and sign up for it anyway but I just wanted to know some more information about it since I know that some of you use e-gold anyway.

Well like you I use to hear about it all the time so I joined. From what I understood of the site is your money on there is all backed by valuable metal for example silver,platinum and gold. The only thing I could see that was different from any other payment site is after a certain amount you can physically request and take possession of the metal like a small bar of gold which is pretty cool and unique the only thing is I dont personally know of anyone who has ever done it. So ya hope that helps you out!
