colonial mentality is definitely the reason why we prefer imported goods over those that are locally made. people sometimes say that it's the quality that they are after. however, only few filipinos know that most of the items we buy from other country are actually manufactured here in the philippines through the subcontractors hired by big companies abroad. for instance, Reebok, GAP, Esprit and Anne Klein are some of the famous brands that are actually being manufactured in companies within the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

FIRST AND FOREMOST IT IS THE COLONIAL MENTALITY!!!
Secondly, the quality. We're used to that imported goods are of good quality. But when you take a look at the labels, made in china, made in sri lanka, made in china, even made in the Philippines. Materials are provided by this manufacturers, it is only cheap labor that they are after from thses countries. But lately, quality is not that good anymore.

I think it is because of what's been taught to us that imported goods are of superior quality although there are also local products that are good, infact they are exported to other countries, we are not aware sometimes. Another thing is that the notion that if you bought an imported item, people thinks that you are rich and makes us a little proud. It somehow elevates our mentality that we are also superior than those who can't afford such things.

some people would admit this, some people may not but i think the general culture is that imported goods are of better quality, more popular and more expensive than local goods.
