I belong to a few different online support groups. I was just looking at one and reading a post someone made. They introduced themselves with their real name (something like Rianna or something close) but said they prefer to be called Wysdom.
Do any of you do that? Your real name is say Bob and you like to be called Blaze or something? I don't do that. I use my real name. It seemed so odd to me when I read that.

I gained a nickname when I was in 9th grade. Raychill. Which is also my username for many online things or other variations. So many people call me "Raychill" or "Chill" but it honestly is my real name if you really think about it. I just don't think many people actually realize it. Say it out loud..."Ray Chill" It sounds like "Rachel" right? That's my real name.
I don't really mind whether people call me Raychill, chill or Rachel, but since my user name is usually a form of "raychill" or "chill" most people online call me that and if they ask my real name and prefer to use that I'm ok with that too.

I fully understand that. It makes perfect sense. I knew your name was Rachel by your nickname because as you said it sounds like it.
This was just a a strange name to use instead of her real name. At least I thought so. I know someone whose name is Courtney and she decided that wasn't unique enough so she uses Kourtiney so she can be different.
Of course I should have said in my question - do you use your real name in life as opposed to online.

I knew a Jessica who prefered to spell it "Jesicka" to be different like the Courtney thing.
I think it is weird to go by a completely off the wall nickname. Especially in real life. I guess I can see having an alias online, because you can be anyone you want to be online. That does seem weird though, especially if you first introduce yourself with your real name. If you're going to use an alias you should only use the alias.
I knew a girl named Nicole who always went by Pickle. I think some people are a bit strange.

I can definitely understand using an alias online. Heck most of us here do so!
I don't understand introducing yourself by your real name and then telling people to call you something else.
I don't go up to people and say "Hi my name is Maria but I prefer Phoenix so call me that". I just don't get it.

I very rarely use my real name, I have a pseudonym for online conversations. Maybe it's a bit of a paranoia thing, but it makes me uncomfortable when people know my real name and I hardly know anything about them. A pseudonym that sounds like a real name is good enough for me.

Sorry I should have been more clear. I don't mean using a pseudonym to talk to strangers; but rather in real life.
My name is Maria and I don't ask people to call me Venus because I like it better.
So do you use your real name in life?

See another good reason we should get to edit our posts!
I got a chuckle when I first read your screen name cause sushi is assumed to be raw and your name says you cook it! Love it!

Ooh, that makes a bit more sense. :D Yes, in real life I use my real name. Close friends use my nickname, but I'd never demand that someone I've never met before would call me by that.

I am Garden Gerty in a few places, but if I am not Garden Gerty, then I use my real name, at least the first name. I would get very confused. I also would have a hard time using something like a descriptive for myself. That is just me, though. Why are you maildumpster?

I just had always wondered about the name maildumpster. I would have a hard time calling myself Beauty, or Princess, etc. Although I did have a neighbor named Princess.

I should have been more clear in my post that I meant in real life.
I am maildumpster for a very simple reason. I have an email account that I use for online earning and sign ups that are sure to get me junkmail. It starts with maildumpster. So I just use that here. In my online groups and such I go by my real name. (well of course I had to choose screen names for all of them and in most groups I use the same name)

I fully understand using an alias online. Makes perfect sense. But you don't introduce yourself by your real name and tell people to call you something different.
There are online support groups for just about anything you can think of. If you go to Yahoo groups or MSN groups you can search through them and I am sure you will find a grief support group! Take care.

I love my name, its unique and i have not met a person who has the same real name as I do. But sometimes, probably for the sake of excitement and mystery and me not wanting people to know what my real name is, I use another name, a name which I have always wanted but was never really given to me by my parents. :)

That's cool that you already have a unique name. I can understand giving people a 'fake' name if you want to protect your identity but I am having trouble understanding using a 'fake' name in everyday life.
It could just be me... some things just boggle my brain.

Sorry I am a bit confused. Do you use your real name in real life or go by something you like better?

Online, I usually use one of my nicknames - like Silver (a nickname my brother gave me). I feel like I still have some privacy (unless I'm talking to someone I know in real life - then I use my real name).
In the real world I use my real name. Except for when I went to work. I worked as a waitress/dancer - and for safety reasons (some guys are stalkers) NONE of the girls used their real name.

My real name is John but I much prefer to go by the name Jigglypuff...LOL. That seems like a very strange practice to me. I find that to be a little pretentious to be honest. I actually just ran across it recently when I took the kids on a ghost tour. The guides name was Ryan but he said he preferred to be called Pony Boy but at least he said we could call him by his real name if we weren't comfotable uding his monicker.

Jigglypuff - Pony Boy LOL I can't stop laughing. I have tears from laughing so hard. I think it is a bit pretentious as well.
Take care Jiggly - glad to see you back!

Yes, in real life I use my real name. I prefer to use my middle name and not my first name. I think it is very common for people to use nicknames in real life.

HA! As soon as I saw this post it reminded me of this kid, Jason from 10th Grade in Highschool.
He was new, and on his first day, he introduced himself:
"Hi, I'm Jason, but you can all call me Boots".
Nobody, and I mean: not a single soul, called him boots.
You just can't give yourself a nickname, it has to be someone else knighting you with it.
And likewise, a nickname that one person gives you (such as a partner's pet-name around the house) is not something that all your friends should use as well.
Personally, I love my name: Gemila (it feels naughty saying that online, as I have the whole online paranoia thing also), but many people have difficulty pronouncing or remembering it (gem-illa, difficult, eh? =P) So I tell them to come up with something to call me, as I don't like "Gem" or "Millie".
But aren't pseudonyms fun!
=P

My real full name is Tomas Semeros Sedaya and I am from the Philippines. My nickname is Tom. In official transactions I always use my true name but in casual events I just use my shortened name Tom. This baptized name Tomas, was actually not supposed to be the name selected by my parents. They had selected Tommy as my first name because it would just relect my condition at that time: cute and cuddly. Unfortunately, the strict baptizing Catholic priest never allowed the same to be affixed unto me. I think this is still the time when the priest had this good amount of influence over the faithful. My parents just obliged. Actually, my name Tomas is not considered an attractive name here in my country. It connotes antiquity and /or extinct idea or people. I really hate thinking about that priest who had the nerve to influenced into my life even up to now.

I think it is a bit odd to insist on being called by a specific name. I know in our circle of friends we have had a couple of instances where we had two (or more) people with the same first name, so we would ask them what they preferred to be called to differentiate between them. So when we had a Robert already, the second Robert became "Bobert." And then when we had two Nates running around, I told the one who was newer to the group that he had to choose a new name. He asked to be called "Dog Boy." :)

Well, I usually use a nickname, and only use my real name online when using MSN to work or something like that.
I've started in the internet just because of fun, talking using mirc with some friends, so I really got used to have nicknames. Today I'd to confess that I fell a little strange when I have to use my real name on some chatting.
