i'm adopting one of my friends havanese puppy in 3 weeks time and it's my first time to own a dog. i'm excited but at the same time i need a lot of advice in taking care of the puppy. i've been reading about havanese over the net and i've learned some things about the breed. i hope you can also share with me tips on how to care for my puppy like feeding, shots needed, grooming, housebreaking, things that i need to buy, etc.

I don't know anything about this breed, but I do know that puppies need lots of love and patience. The first thing you need to do is take the puppy to the vet and they will tell you all the shots needed and how often to get them. As far as feeding, we just always make sure there is food in the dog bowl for ours, well we have two and we don't know which one has eaten so there's always plenty. Then it's important they get exercise or they get depressed. Tips on housebreaking, when you see them circling in the house, that usually means they are sniffing out a place to do business, so pick him/her up, carry him/her outside and he/she will get a clue after a few times that outside is for business. We buy our dogs plenty of things to chew on to keep their teeth in good condition, like dental rawhide bones, this keeps their breath from smelling bad too. That's my experience, good luck heartsweet!

My dog has health problems so I can only go buy what he needs. But I usually buy him Ubacanuba (sp?) food. Also if you take him to get cleaned or buy something for her tell them the dog is a Maltese, most people don't know what a havanese is. A vet should, if they don't say "Like a Maltese" also its helpful to get them a toy that they will love enough to ignore your furniture. I got Buster a ball and he really loves it.
