I know a friend who is a very hard working guy but unfortunately he didn't succeed in his exams. It was almost unbelievable when the results came out. I dont know what happened? What could be the cause of his failure? Is there anyone or knows anybody who had undergone through similar situation that is where hard work didn't pay? I will sit for this exams next year and i know its really tough but im a bit scared now koz even if i will make my best nothing guarantees that i'll succeed!

I think it depends of the kind of the exam. if you are a hard working student but you spent your time in diligently in memorizing the lesson that has been given, and you know that all things you have memorized will be examined later, you precisely will be succeed in the exam. But if the exam is about how is you way in solving something, I am not sure a hard working student succeed. The answer is, the way we learn something is affecting our success in an exam.

there's a time for every purpose under heaven... taking the exams is really difficult. if it is not the exam itself then it is in the emotional vulnerability to failures and disappointments. i experienced the similar case. i failed the exam but i am reviewing now to take it again. sometimes, no matter how hard you tried, if something is not meant for you, then it is not. sometimes, we tend to push ourselves into something that we want but if it comes wrapped in a different package, then we would feel frustrated. your friend's wishes maybe answered but not in the packaging that he expected. he may have a different calling in life. but if he really desires it, he should go for it. who knows, his time might be NOW.

I know how that feels, for instance, I crammed all the maths formulas into my head and tried a number of tough questions before the exams, but still, it nearly failed although I was expecting something more. I think half of it depends on your luck. ^^

There are lot of possibility why he failed in the examination even he make hard work for it. Hard work alone when reviewing for exam is not enough, sometimes we need to concentrate on what we are doing and we must put all our attention in our lesson. Honestly there are moments in my school days that I keep reading on my lesson but when the examination is already in front of me, my mind blackout and I really don't know what I should answer, specially in Math examination.

Maybe the exams freaked him out and he was not prepared mentally for them. I know it happens to a lot of my friends including me. I could of done better if I had mentally prepared for it, I mean I knew the stuff but got so worked up when I sat down for the exam and just couldn't remember half of what I learnt.

Hello Jessem!
Hard work alone doesn't guarantee good results or success in itself. Hard work is simply a tool just like intelligence and some other things are, it is very important though, perhaps the most important. In order to succeed, one also needs intelligence, not only to understand but also to guide the hard work, Confidence and commitment. These are different things distinct from each other.
In my personal experience, perhaps confidence in oneself is the most important factor in success. One need to reassure him/herself that nothing is impossible and if someone else can do something then why couldn't I? I have always told it to myself as well as to my friends and without much preparation we have been scoring very good in exams. Of course I am not saying that other factors are not important, they are..but the binding factor even for other tools like intelligence, hard work and commitment is confidence that one has in oneself. If you apply it, you will see that it also increases IQ, you may disagree with me but it is something I have experienced time and again. Like hard work, confidence too can't win you success. So, one should keep in mind all the factors and should work accordingly.
Causes of Failure of your friend could be many. Probably he was not trying in the right direction, probably he was forcing himself against his will. It is also possible that he had some family or strong emotional problem which diverted his attention, this diversion causes 10 hours of studies reduced to 1 i.e. human mind becomes very less efficient when it's not focused. So I would recommend that you talk to him and ask him if he was okay before or during exams and how his exams passed. This will help you pinpoint the causes and you can then avoid those causes.
I wish you best of luck i your endeavors to come in life:-)

Indeed knowledge is not everything...when I graduated from highschool a friend of mine who was the best studendt in highschool did not pass the exams because he pannked.he knew it all but when he got in front of the exam paper he blocked himself and became verry scared...I belive that 50% of any exam is about your attitude.
