trial and tribulation,religion

Why is life so hard sometimes? Im religious to a degree. God says he wont put more on you then you can handle but the things we go through sometimes is carzy.I know we have free will but things smack us in the face sometimes that we dont have control over. I do appreciate the small things in life but how do you handle big disappointments, and trial and tribulation in your life?
