I do not know how to drive a car that is standard. I do want to learn because that is what our new car is. Why is it that most men know how to drive standard where as most woman do not. Actually my husband prefers it. Years ago I was taught to drive standard but I was always afraid of rolling backward on a hill when I had to stop and go again. How many of you drive both standard and automatic?

The best way to learn is to have to learn. Have your husband drop you off far from home with no other way to get home other than driving that car. By the time you get home, you will know how to use it. I think men learn how to drive a stick because they are expected to. Women don't bother because they feel no pressure. All people should learn how to drive sticks because it makes you a better driver and they cause less emissions.

My Buick is an automatic I can drive a standard and personally I prefer a standard it's much better in the winter out here with the amount of snow and ice we get, but you just can't have everything and I'm a very strict Buick Only person. My Buick is a 1994 and anything newer here is all automatic now.

I have never had a driverĀ“s license but my father tried to teach me to drive in the 60s and I learned to drive a Volkswagen - you know the kind that looks like a bubble.
It was not difficult to learn and I wish I had continued but it is not too late to start again...
I guess you could train the up hill start somewhere off road so that you feel safer with it.

yes, I can drive standard - and much prefer it to automatic. my father tried to teach me when I was a teen but I could not get the hang of it. Then, 6 years ago we were checking out a car to buy and I said whooops to the dealer, can't get that one after all - it is standard. He taught me in a matter of minutes. I, then, in turn taught my husband.
as you depress the clutch to shift, lift up on the accelerator at the same rate.
now driving automatic is, um, boring. ;)

I dont know even in an emergency if I could drive a standard vehicle. I had tried to learn when I first got my licence but I just couldnt do it. I was so scared that when I was on a hill that I would roll back and hit someones car. I drove over town once with the nissan stanza my parents had which was standard but that was the last time I ever did that. One time I just tried to move it so I could get my car out and first I had it stuck in the road because I kept stalling it lol then I got it stuck in a snow bank and had to call my sisters boyfriend from over town to get it out for me lol.

I am not intending to brag but, I can drive anything that has 4 wheels on the ground and one for steering. It isn't that difficult to do, but it does take some practice to get good at it. Just keep trying. Good luck.
