Microsoft was the first to produce an operating system that was usable by the average person with no computer experience, which naturally attracted a lot of followers. Linux now offer a vast array of distributions that are very user friendly, but most people have become so accustomed to Windows that they have never considered trying anything else.

no.. microsoft was not the first.. MS begun with MS-DOS at a time where the first graphical interfaces comes up.. they just made a deal with IBM to sell their x86-PC's with the MS-DOS preinstalled..

Using Linux need more extra experience, especially for desktop computer. A lot of people already feel comfortable with windows but not comfortable with linux because windows give more user friendly that linux doesn't have.

Why do you thin so? Have you ever tried a modern linux distribution with Compiz Fusion/Beryl installed? It is much nicer, user friendly and comfortable. I think that over a span of several years linux will become very popular and the number of linux user will increase several times. Only negative thing in linux is that it is hard to find games for it, in all other aspects like stability, efficiency, user-friendly environment, cost, security and many others things linux beats windows.

I think its because Linux is bit complicated and one need to have experience or need to learn before using it extensively. And also since, Windows is most commonly used operating system people prefer to use it. But i think the way Linux is evolving with its better GUI and user friendly ness , people will start using Linux.

as linux is open source so it is little bit of complicated so users are less.also any new thing take time to settle in any industry

I have installed the "redhat linux" on the computer several times and "Ubuntu linux" three times, but I never got deep into the system itself. They are a little bit complicated for me to play with. Many of us have got so accustomed to the widely used windows system that few of us got the idea of trying another different OS. I personally think windows is user friendly and easy to control.

A few of people use Linux because its free. Yes its free and being free means less interest to develop and provide support for its users. If users have less support, then they will not be interested to use it. Think for instance when you install a new video card in a Linux platform and find yourself stuck with no derive support for it.

Traditionally linux systems have not been very user friendly. That's changing right now and in the years to come hopefully more people will choose a free OS that is as user friendly as Microsoft Windows.

A lot of people don't even know where the OS ends and their PC begins so suggesting a new OS can be daunting at the best of times. I'm a huge pc user and have been playing with linux for over 10 years now but even I allways come back to windows. Windows is straight forward, not as easy to use as mac but the software support alone simply overwhelms the rest of the OS market. If only VMWare could make a base linux system that would run on x86 architecture then you choose your OS as add-ons, the world would be a much simpler place to browse :P Buy a laptop/pc, install linux + VMWare, then choose which or multiple OS's to run. It can be done easily at the moment but even this takes some technical knowledge.
