What do you prefer... Marriage first? or Live-in first?

Many couples out there are living together without getting married. Don't get me wrong, I just observed. And some of them are all have kids, 1-4 kids or more maybe. Do we really need to do the live-in first before getting married? I've talk to some and they told me they want live-in first because you will get to know your partner better and if you don't like or you can't take what attitude he/she got, you can leave him/her. For you, what do you want first?
