I've just moved into a new home. so that means new appliances or stuff passed down from other folks, and housewarming gifts.
these include stuff like a toaster, electric jug, coffee press, pots, wok, TV, dvd player, iron, vacumn cleaner, etc.
question is, do you keep the boxes after you take these things out to use? I know some people do, cos when they pass their belongings to me, it's placed back in its original box! i figured that keeping it might be useful because
a) you can pack it back in when you move again, and it makes for easy moving. in its package it's protected and in a box shape.
b) you can refer to the box for more information on the product.
however, can you imagine if i kept every single box? where would i put it? they would all take far too much space. of course i could fold them up, but being lazy and busy i don't think i can foresee myself doing that.
so i throw some and keep some. what about you?

I usually don't keep boxes for too long. Usually if I buy something, I keep the box for a week or so, because if it doesn't work, I want to be able to return it to the store. After that period, I usually throw out all my boxes. The only box I have kept is the one for my Laptop, because if I ever have to get it serviced, I have to mail it to the repair place as there are no authorized repair places in my neighbourhood.

lots of stores seem to require packaging when returning. for me, if I have sent off the guarantee card they should repair or replace whether or not i retained the packaging rite?

It depends.. I do keep some boxes though I still cannot figure out why.
We do not need the boxes really unless we foresee sending back the item for a refund. Saving the buses for moving house would be even more ridiculous since free boxes are now part of house moving packages.
We throw most of the boxes away but there will be weird moments when I would keep the boxes. They just take up precious space if you ask me, so once in a while, I still go through them to throw away lol.:P

well, when u move house, if you can pack the same item, esp if fragile, into its original box then no need for more wrapping cushioning etc.
just recall some of the boxes i keep are for ornaments.

If boxes are in good condition I do keep them. My furnace room is actually overflowing with empty boxes. My mother has cupboards of empty boxes. We use them to wrap gifts in, not to put the same product back in it. My mother-in-law does this too because my kids have opened Christmas presents and thought they had a box of chocolates until they opened the box and found something completely different. Shoes boxes are excellent boxes to hold onto as they are very sturdy and some are pretty large. They are great for the kids to decorate and use as holders of some sort. We actually had to fill a shoe box for the Christmas fundraising where the children filled a shoe box with gifts for a child in a third world country.
But I digress. Larger boxes can be used for school projects when cut up. It is also good to keep them for storage containers. I still have some of my girls' baby clothes - the nicest ones, in a couple of boxes. I am not keeping the boxes for the purpose of returning the item to the box, though I will keep the box initially for that purpose when I purchase a new item such as a blender in the event that it needs to be returned to the store. I don't re-gift.

you're right about shoe boxes - i love them! esp since they are easy to 'seal' and 'open'. some are very pretty too.
your fundraising idea sounds great. Lots of regular boxes to ship away. :)

I hope that you like your new house. I know what you mean about wondering whether or not to keep empty boxes. I suggest that you keep them in a place that you don't go to very often. In my house this would be my loft. Do you have a loft or attic you could use? As you say it would be good to fold them if you do this. If not then I suggest you think about throwing them away. I would, however, keep any information leaflets about each product in a safe place. I use my filing cabinet for this. Good luck.

Yes. I guess that you will have to be very careful not to put too much in your small store room hey. I have a large cupboard in my lounge and it is great for keeping the cleaning stuff in. I didn't have anything like this in my previous house, just a tiny airing cupboard.

i don't have a loft unfortunately.. only a tiny storeroom. yup, have been keeping instructional leaflets in a file - when I'm feeling organised!

I tend to always keep boxes because I think I may need them when I decide to move or something. But they can be very messy and annoying sometimes when they pile up. I try to get rid of them sometimes but not all the time. I especially like keeping computer and computer related boxes. I like to keep TV boxes as well. Come to think of it, I think I keep way to many boxes. I have to start getting rid of them.

We used to keep all the boxes we had for 'future' use. Well it's been years and still didn't have anything to use them for. So we decided that enough is enough. Go throw everything that isn't useful. *LOL*
There were others though that we kept to keep the 'important' things to hide away.
These days, the only boxes I keep are the boxes of my shoes. Well, I don't really keep them for nothing. I just put the shoes in their original boxes to avoid dust.

yup, they should make transparent shoe boxes so that we can see at a glance what's inside! :)

One trick that one of my friends use, is taking a photo of each shoe then stick it on the box. So she wouldn't have to open to know what's inside.
Pretty cool huh?

I keep a box only for a few weeks until I am certain that a product is working...then I toss it. I don't have room to be storing empty boxes! I suppose one could take one large box and put a bunch of smaller ones into it if they felt the need to save all the smaller ones for some reason. (a person who moves frequently for instance).

It used to be that I did not keep any. But then I saw that it did come in handy sometimes. Also, if you sell things on Ebay or other places, it seems to help if you have the original box. But if you have a lot of small kitchen appliances, those boxes can add up fast and then I worry about them being a fire hazard. So now what I do is those appliances that I think I'm going to keep forever, or until they fall aprat, I get rid of those boxes. Appliances that I don't use very much, like a pasta maker, that I may sell, or give away to a friend, I will probably keep those boxes so I can store the item and keep it clean and neat.

Congrats on moving to a new home!
If the things are not displayed, I will keep them in their original packing. For things that have a place on top of the kitchen cabinet, I remove their boxes.
Unless there is alternative use for the boxes, I do not keep it. The box will be cut, folded and waiting to be donated. I give them to the recycling company which comes to my block for collection every fortnight.

thanks! yah, some that I'm not using yet, like sandwich maker are still in their box below. maybe I will swop that with the toaster that is out of its (kept behind) box, and then keep both boxes since i dunno when I'll 'retire' which!

I don't keep any boxes at all. The only boxes I have are for my computer modem and for my digital camera and camcorder. I only kept them because I threw them up on a shelf in my closet. I have absolutely no room to be storing boxes, folded or not. I keep manuals for everything in a special drawer, but other than that, everything goes !! Congrats on your new home !!

for me it'll depend on the size of the appliance.
if the appliance is those big ones e.g. fridge or washing machine, i won't keep the box.
but if the appliance are small and quite portable, most prob i'll keep the box.
another point of consideration is the durability of the item.
if it's those that i expect to replace every year or two, e.g. mobile phones and such,
i'd most prob throw the box away coz unlikely to be need the box.
my home is quite cluttered by the boxes that we keep. :p

Chances are, if you are setting up a new home after getting married, you'd keep the empty boxes of the appliances you've bought or received from others. After all, you will still have lots of cupboard space, so why throw these boxes away if you can store them until space is a constraint? I'd do the same too. These boxes will also come in handy if you want to use them in future to store other things away.

Luckily we have a storage unit in the garage so I keep most of the big boxes there. The rest I throw or give away if I think i don't need it anymore.

Like you, I keep some and throw some.
I usually will keep the boxes for at least a month before discarding them.
Whether I keep the boxes for good will depend on whether I need to shift home or shift stuff in the near future... say 5 years.
If I don't foresee that happening, I will most likely discard the box.
Also, I will keep boxes for items that are not squarish... things like the food processor, pots and pans and crockery... so that I can continue to keep them in their respective boxes in the store room. Makes searching for them easier and storing less of a headache.

I keep all empty boxes and always tell myself that I will have a use for them some day. But somehow or other, I will not have a need for them and end up throwing them out anyway when I do my annual spring cleaning. Then one fine day I will have a need for a box or boxes and Ill have to end up going round town lookin for them again.

well, you have the point... If I have more time and more space then I will fold and keep them all, but you have your situation so you are doing the right thing. I would do that too if I am lazy and busy. you are lucky to have everything ready in the house... Im happy for you. hey, empty boxes can be use later such as moving old stuff out or put junk stuff in.... then you dont have to buy those again, right?
