well the day is here... i am due to go back to work tomorrow after being off for nearly 1 1/2 years with postnatal depression..Im actually looking forward to it but i have been back a few times before now and always ended up coming back off sick after a few days because i just wasnt ready! i have been referred for CBT therapy which hopefully will turn my negative thoughts into positive thoughts.
Just wondered if anyone has got any advice on dealing with going back to work or any experiences with CBT that would be really helpful...
thanks

I am not exactly sure what CBT is but good luck with going back to work! Going anywhere, doing anything can be the most difficult thing in the world when in a deep depression. Hopefully your return to work is a good one!
My freshman year of high school my parents considered taking me out for the last quarter/semester due to my depression. My attitude towards daily life was getting so sour they thought it would be best if I were to be separated from everybody just in case something were to happen, causing me to freak on somebody (keep in mind I am no small kid, 6 foot 4 inches at about 280.) Thankfully I didn't get pulled out, nor did anyone feel the need to cross me during those times.
Sorry if that has nothing to do with CBT but you asked for our experiences so hopefully its ok.
Once again, good luck with going back to work. That is a HUGE step into getting better, atleast in my case school was.

The hardest part for me was before I got on the medication and consoling. It took a couple tries but we found the correct medication and I absolutely loved my consoler. Are you on any anti depressants or anything?

oh good luck! You should be so excited to go back to work! Don't have any negative thoughts keep you out of the game. It'll be fun to get back to work, meet and associate with people!
If you don't mind, can I ask what kind of work you do?

Oh goodness X.X That's gotta be a tough job, getting yelled at all the time. Maybe you could get another job, I mean if you don't like this one.
Find a job that you would enjoy doing and then it wouldn't be so hard to go back. It could be exciting, starting somewhere new and fresh!

i work on the phones, trying to stop people from leaving a service. it can get pretty rough sometimes when all they do is shout at you because of all the problems they have had

Good luck!! You can do it... No more negative thoughts allowed. Positive thoughts only! I don't know what CBT is, but figure it has something to do with your mental and physical well-being. Good luck with the program and with going back to work.

I only have good things to say about CBT which i decided to try voluntarily. Meaning that when i was younger i found that i was not too happy with myself. Always found myself in the same sorts of trouble. So I decided to start CBT to learn to know myself and get in more realistic contact with my own feelings. However CBT only works if you co-operate. Dont expect the asnwers to come by itself. Its hard work but sure worth it.

My thoughts and well wishes are coming your way. I admire your courage and willingness to move beyond your safe boundaries. To me you are a hero because I know from personal and professonal experience how daunting it can feel.
I am not familiar with CBT...is it the same as ECT? That I do know about.
Whatever course you decide to take...I sincerely hope you will find the emotional safety you need to continue on your healing journey. If you can keep your faith strong, believe in yourself and keep asking for the right answers..I know they will come.
Best regards...

My advice would be that you consider your health status and go to work for a day or two and see how you feel and then if you think you are ready continue but if you do not wait a little longer. Postnatal depression.... just stop stressing and when you return to work keep your mind focused on it and not on things which may cause stress. ....... wish you luck

Hi there katied1985! I guess by this time, you have gone back to work and I hope that it was okay. Well, I don't know much about CBT but I have experienced being depressed and being excited(& anxious) 'bout going back to work--after 5 yrs., in my case. You see, I have worked for a big company for 7 yrs. before I decided to quit after giving birth to my second child. I have 3 kids(less than 2 yrs. apart in age)and believe me, there was so much reason for me to be depressed then. Anyway, after 5 yrs. of domestication, with the desire to improve our living situation, I was able to land a job with another big company. Backed by determination, prayers, & love for my family, I was able to stay in this job for 5 yrs. now despite the daily pressures of dealing with irate customers, sales quotas, & report deadlines among others. I didn't mean for this response to be lengthy but this is just my humble way of saying that "IT CAN BE ACHIEVED!" Just stay focused and concentrate on what is essential in your life. Always count your blessings. And everytime you feel that depression coming in, all the more that you need to think of everything positive in your life--no matter how small or trivial. And if it would help that you think of someone less fortunate than you are, then do so. Believe in yourself and continue with what you're doing right now(CBT & work). Good luck and God bless!

I don't exactly what CBT therapy is all about but I think its something to make you feel good emotionally and physically. Hopefully this therapy will make you ready for coming back to work. As what you have said the real problem is your feeling of depression (from postnatal experienced). Maybe it's time to refresh all things and I think going to work will help you to forget those trauma or bad experiences. Just make yourself busy with the work (I think there's a lot to do with a 1 1/2 years of absence) and probably the confidence and the feeling of joy and happiness will follow through. Good luck and hope everything will go fine.

I wish you all the best! Negative thoughts turning to positive do not happen over night! I know! I had to retrain myself to think more positively! When I had a negative thought I trained myself to say stop, rethink that and I would change the thought to a positive!
Sometimes has the negatives repeated themselves in my head I would say no and repeat my positive a few times. I disciplined myself to do this and now the positive thoughts are more natural then the negatives! So don't be hard on yourself! You are back to work this is a good start! You deserve to have positive thoughts!
