Yesterday, here in WV, we have some thunderstorms and do you know I saw children swimming at the public pool while we were having these storms. What do you think? Is it safe to swim while there are thunderstorms? I would think since there is lightning with thunder that it's very dangerous.

It is very dangerous to be in water when there is a thunder storm. The lightening could strike and kill you instantly in the water and that is not good. I do not even shower or have a bath when there is a thunder storm on the go. I do not take risks like that and will not allow my kids to do the same. It is too dangerous man and parents need to educate their children accordingly.

I think, however, some parents need educating..Imagine a parent allowing their child to go swimming when there is a thunderstorm going on.

Ja this is very true. Parents are sometimes the worse people for their children. Often though children have been taught and then choose to ignore their parents, especially since this was at a public pool. But there should be some supervision at a public pool too and then that adult should not have allowed the children to be swimming there. But we do not know all the circumstances and therefore we cannot judge and know who is to be blamed for children swimming while there is a thunder storm. At least all of us here on mylot have learnt a good lesson from this posting.

Since it is "public" I would think they would close the pool as there could be some difficulties should one of these children be injured due to the fact that the pool was left open in the storms.

Oh no. I can't see that the public pool would even allow this to happen. I do know that as a parent and a grandparent there is no way any of mine would even be outside much less in a swimming pool. This makes me angry just to read it. I have always heard that where there is thunder there is lightning.

I was simply shocked..I guess some parents must have very little love for their child or they never really understood what it is to be a mother or father.

Yes, of course. Water is a great electricity conductor. Besides, when you are at the sea or at the pool, you are the highest point around, so lightning will go there.

I know water is a great conductor for electricity. I really can't fathom why a public pool would be open during the storm.

Wow! Thats just bad! I dont understand why the pool wasnt closed..around here as soon as thunder is heard they immediately close the pool and have the children call there parents if they need to..Your pool sounds like a dangerous place..but i guess its the parents fault for letting there children stay swimming in that..and thats just really bad parenting..its sad..but its gonna take a child getting killed or zapped bu a storm to wake everyones eyes..and i just pray it doesnt happen..

Sad but true; I think it will be some child being zapped that is going to wake up some of our people here.

It is definitely not safe to swim in an outdoor swimming pool during a thunderstorm. They should not be in the water at all so I wonder what is wrong with the parents for allowing them to swim while a storm was happening. I am not sure if it is safe to swim in an indoor swimming pool but I would probably avoid that as well to be safe.

Well the pool was outdoors. So this is what really got me going. I know it didn't stop raining and why the city left the pool open makes me wonder.

No No No...its not safe at all to swim in any kind of water when thunderstorms come up. They should have closed the pool in that case.

I would hate to see something bad happen that could have so easily been prevented by them closing the pool.
