I have two chinchillas and I have come to find that they make wonderful pets. However, they are not suitable for children under the age of 12, this being because of their fragile bones and agile behavior. You can train them to use a litter box type thing, but it can only be used for urine because they cannot control their feces outflow. Make sure that you "chinproof" a room before letting a chin run around because they'll go straight to any wiring and chew through them in no time. Anyone know when chins hit puberty? Mine are a couple months old and have yet to hit it.

I have 3 chinchillas right now, mom, dad, and baby. I also have 3 children, 11,9 and 6. My children love the chinchillas and as with any baby animals, or small animals, children are great around them, giving them extra love and attention, you just need to make sure that you teach children to be gentle with animals.

I have 4 adult and 3 baby chins. I just took my little boy chin out of the his mom's cage because most breeders will tell you that they become sexually active at about 10 weeks. He hasn't tried anything yet that I can tell but I don't want to take the chance. If you have females you can tell when they start puberty by them releasing heat plugs...this may be tricky though since they will some times eat them.
