E-Gold: Is it like PayPal?

I've read on a lot of sites that they also pay via E-Gold but I've not tried the site itself. Is it the same as PayPal, like regular cash or does it give you like gold stock? Just curious about it, if anyone is a member of E-Gold, please fill me in. Thanks!
