17/07/1967.....I Have Finally Reached The Big 40. Is This Where Life Begins?

40 - Does life really begin at 40
July 16, 2007 7:05pm CST
I am out tonight to celebrate and I plan to do it in style with my good friends alcohol, cigs and the lager two step all the way home!! So is true, is it all wonderful or just downhill from now on? What are your memories of reaching 40, I need some good advice.

Well honey I really hope that your head isn't too sore today and the lager two step didn't make you stumble too badly and hurt yourself - I have been in both positions before and am really missing them just now when I can't drink! lol Happy $)th my friend and I hope the excitement really starts now! I can't help you but it will be my turn to hit 40 in a couple of years - so I will be looking to you for advice then! xxx

It was a great day and I did feel special ahhh!! Although my head was a bit sore, it was definately worth it as you will find out soon my friend. I do think this is my time now, my degree is behind me and a change in career will hopefully happen soon. Although I do find it quite daunting to think I will one day be a teacher. I just hope I do not teach kids like I was, that would be a nightmare!!LOL Cheers xxx

Honey you will be a fantastic teacher - I would be proud to have someone like you teaching Niamh - goodness only knows what schemes the 2 of you would come up with! lol Did you know one of my secret ambitions was to be a teacher but I don't think I will ever get there now! My nephew is starting his probationary year as a teacher in August but he is teaching High School English - my eldest is really upset cos he isn't teaching at his school - but rather my nephew than me - it is primary school kids I would love to teach! xxx

I am so happy that your 40s are a lot happier than your 30s were sweetheart - I know it wasn't an easy time for you! I think I would be a good teacher too - thanks for the vote of confidence - but I couldn't afford to go back to school so I guess I just have to stick to being there for my kids and nices and nephews as well as all their friends, a little is better than nothing after all! xx

Firstly congratulations on reaching 40, have a pint or two on me tonight! Enjoy your celebration tonight, hope you've got tomorrow off to recover! I still have a few years left to go, so I will be reading with interest so I can plan ahead as it were! Enjoy my friend. I think life will begin for me when I get over my depression and make drastic moves in my life, until then life won't begin again!

I certainly did have those pints wolfie and they went down just fine. I think as we grow older, we grow wiser and do begin to put things into perspective. I am sure you will too and know when the time is right to do what will free you so you can move on. Cheers my friend xx

Happy birthday. It's interesting to read all the responses here as I will be turning 40 in December. Birthdays, especially the milestone type, have never really been that big of a deal to me and I will probably just do the same as you on my 40th which is get totally polluted with my friends.

Thanks inked. You only have a few months to go. Well I can say it is nice to have people around who care, like a good drink and celebrate in style. I don't feel any different, but I'm sure as Trans said, once I hit 41 it might sink in!! Cheers x

Happy Birthday!! Turning 40 didn't bother me at all - my crisis happened on my 30th birthday. I was so depressed about turning 30, it just seemed so much older than 29 somehow lol! Turning 40 was the trigger for me to really look at myself and my life and what I'd done and what I wanted to do. I did make quite a lot of changes, some big and some small, which were long overdue. Personally I like being in my forties, in fact generally I like ME a whole lot more now I'm older. I don't want to blow my own trumpet (although of course I'm going to!) but I'm a much nicer person to be around now I think. Getting older has some drawbacks of course (mainly grey hair and facial lines that just suddenly appear out of nowhere!) but on balance the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Anyway - have a great time and make sure you get very, very drunk and behave very, very badly!

Being 40 sounds great Stiletto. I hope I will calm down more now and not be so angry about everything. I have just finished my degree so a new job will be heading my way hopfully next year. I intend to loose my first day as I am going to get very, very drunk. My partners away till the weekend so I will be a good girl (Oh sorry, mature woman) until then.LOL Cheers x

I haven't reached that yet, I still have 4 years left. But I tell you now, I have no intentions of ever getting old. I am fighting it every step of the way. So I am thinking life begins at 40, at least that is how I am going to approach it anyway. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! Hope you have a great night!

I can't remember that far back, I can't even remember what I did last week, It's only downhill if that's the way you want to go, Life can still be full of surprises even when you think you are over the hill. There are a lot of openings once you get older and decide to take things a bit easier, go into semi-retirement. I've got dogs to walk, computers to sit in front of, MyLot & other sites to visit, and even watch telly sometimes. And I've just decided to cut back to only doing a full time job (9-5), no weekends and no working overnight.

Good for you, take a break that you deserve Eskimo. Although there are not enough hour in the day for us to do everything we want!! Thanks for your belated wishes, much appreciated!!XX

Wow...not sure. I was born in 1965 and in December of 2005 I celebrated the nineteenth anniversary of my 21st birthday. Hehe. I really celebrated on my 39th birthday, though! But ever since, I've only had 'anniversaries' of birthdays. lol! For some reason, it bothered me to think that I would be "The big 4-0". Now that I'm (technically!) 41, I guess the next one will be a bad day for me!! But, to be serious, I really don't feel, or act, my age! My motto could be "I don't wanna grow up, I'm a Toys-r-us kid!"
30 Aug 07
LOL!! I must admit when you said you have celebrated your 19th anniversary of your 21st, that really hit home. It only seems like yesterday I was 21. As they say, you are only as old as the person you feel. My partner is 39 so I will always be a year younger than I am!!! Cheers!!

LOL but I'm not yet in my 40. I'm still in the calendar. ^__^ I hope you'll have a blast tonight. have a wonderful birthday!

Thanks secretbear, I celebrated at work too. They had an assembly and I had to sit at the front while they sang Happy Birthday to me, although highly embarrassing it was great the kids sang to me. When asked how old I was they said 4, 17 and 21. They are only 3 & 4 though, but I was flattered LOL. Cheers x

I didn't see this post before or I would have responded sooner. So...first off let me wish you belated Happy Birthday greetings. I also wanted to assure you that my life improved dramatically after I turned 40. I am healthier and in better physical shape than I was in my so-called 'prime.' The 20's and 30's were not good years for me. I was still struggling through the residue of having compulsive coping patterns that manifested in two eating disorders. When I reached 40 I that new decade re-framed things for me and I began to celebrate an inner confidence and the wisdom of my years. I think anyone can maintain an innate 'youthiness' if they have a strong intent to do so. In my view attitude and beliefs shape who we become...and if there is an innate zest for life and a reasonable attempt to stay balanced, eat reasonably well and stay active...the best years remain ahead of us. At least that is my experience and it is defintitely something I intend to keep on doing until things proove to be otherwise. Wishing you all the best as you embark on what I hope will be full of the best that life has to offer! Celebrate life...it goes by too fast not to!

Thank you for your wise words and kind comments. I needed to read these after being told by the bloke above I was following the devil.

Thanks Raia I don't understand why this discussion came to this as I only spoke of being an atheist after the comments were made. I know many christians who love a good drink, but I would never judge them on their lifestyle, who am I to say anything. I posted this in a lighthearted fashion, but it was like someone popping my birthday balloon, when I read the comments made. I really appreciate your kind words, this means alot to me. I don't want to get into arguments about religion but I feel I have the right to defend myself when someone says I am basically following the devil, that is cruel. Anyway, I know who I am and what I do so I will forget it now. I have written back to him after his last post explaining myself and why ballad said what they said. Religious conversations should be left on religious posts, that way no one gets hurt!! Much respect for your perspective xx

When I read your response to mine...and your reference back to those who made all the 'devil talk' I went "HUH?" How did a discussion on your 40th birthday lead to talk of the devil? What did I miss? So I backtracked in an attempt to connect the dots. Then I realized it started with comments about how you celebrated...and the body temple...and a reference about you being an atheist. If you choose to you can fill me in...or not. I assess people by how they interact with me...and I asked you to be a friend because I was drawn to the essence of whom I felt you were by your topics and responses on other sites. From what I have come to know of you as a cyberfriend...you are an intelligent, caring, concerned, compassionate individual who has a broad view of life in its many expressions. That is good enough for me...whether you believe in a Creator or not is your choice. In my view choice is a God given right...if not that a basic human right. So..either way that it is good enough for me. You have a right to choose how you live and what you decide to put into your body...because after all it is YOUR body and your right to choose. Having said this, I am sorry that anyone has to be subjected to the kind of bigotry and judgment you were in those comments. I sense you are strong enough to let their narrow view be their own...because it is just their perception of things. People's opinions only have the power to affect us if we allow it. Somehow you strike me a person who will not allow it...and I say good for you! Let me reiterate it again..you have started a new decade...and may this ten be the best so far.! When I turned forty I affirmed...forty is fabulous, fifty is fantastic...sixty is sensational...and they will be if we choose to make them so. At least that is how I am approaching it...and so far it is working for me! So a month after your momentous day...live strong...and live long! Until we chat again...wishing you warm regards, Raia
