If they actually could make Smell-o-Vision, would you want your TV to have it?

It has been talked about over the years, and we all know right now it isn't possible. Frankly, I don't see it happening at all. But if we could have Smell-o-Vision with our TVs, would you want it? What does that mean? That means if we were watching "Dirty Jobs" on the Discovery Channel, we could all smell it when the host worked in the sewer or in a barn. Not particularly good smells. But we would know what people really go through with their jobs.
On the other side of the spectrum, what if we were watching Top Chef? We would be able to smell the gourmet food the chefs prepared. We would know the aromas that so tempt people who can afford fine dining. On the show, they do challenges and one took them outside. We could smell the flowers they walked past, we could smell parts of nature that we don't get in our area of the world.
So what do you think? Would you subscribe to Smell-o-Vision? Or would you not be able to handle the bad smells with the good smells. It could all depend on what you watch. So, would you give it a try?

It would be fine if it could be turned off when they were showing the dirtiest jobs on the Learning Channel. Maybe it should be programed to one network, like the Food Network for Instance and the Discovery Channel when there is a show about nature. Just don't put it on CSI or crime shows. Some people cannot stand the smell of blood, not to mention guts, and others will be disappointed it is ketcbup.

All those things in CSI and show's like that are fake. So,if we smelt that it would take some of the drama out of the show's and the rateings would go down.Bummer! I like CSI,Without a Trace,Law and Order and show's like that.
I agree if it were only for cooking and gardening show's and I would have the capability to turn it off and on it would probably be ok.

Hello ambie. How are you now? I just gotten out from my exile but still, I'm laying low in the meantime.
I haven't heard anything like the smell-o-vision yet but it does sounds interesting. But then, viewers won't be able to use their imagination to the max. They will rely on using their olfactory senses to smell instead of seeing what's going on inside the world of TV.

Actually I have never heard of it.It does not sound like something that I would want to waste my money on.Ok,yes it would be nice to smell some of those meals on the food network shows, but if I really want to smell it I could use the money I spent on the subscription to buy the food. Then cook it myself and taste it too. That sound's better.

I don't know how this could even happen, I think it is impossible. But if we could have it, I would like to have it, especially with cooking shows! Lol. But I would also want the option of being able to turn it on and off, otherwise I don't think I could handle it lol!

I guess maybe if you could turn it on and off. I am pregnant right now, so the last thing I need is to smell a bunch of different smells. Sometimes, I think it would be ok, like when I watched Emeril the other day he said I wish you could smell this, but then again, maybe it would just be a tease..well as you can see I am all over the place on this, I hope you understood that.. =)

I think it wouldn't be bad as long as there was some kind of switch, to turn on and off...I don't think we would want to smell everything that was on TV--like say you were watching the news and the report is about a fire...don't think I would want to smell something burning..--but the idea of watching a cooking show and smell the aromas would be great! LOL

We were having this discussion not long ago. Hubby said it would be nice to be able to enjoy the aroma of something that was being prepared on a cooking show. But, would we really enjoy the smell of a cattle farm or something that is not to pleasant to us? Not sure that I would really enjoy this one.

I would love to give it a try. But I think I would like to have the option of turning it off when I wanted. That way, I could watch the shows with the bad "smells" (think Fear Factor), and not have to share in the glorious odors if I didn't want to. LOL

Absolutely, I think it would enhance the TV viewing experience tremendously.
I can just imagine food network piping those smells into our house, not to mention Betty Crocker and Aunt Jemima.
I would assume it would have an on-off switch, so that it would not be on all of the time, not to mention something similar to a volume control, in order to control the intensity of the smell.

This is a very cool discussion. It sounds like fun but on the hand, I do not want to smell McDonald's burgers. If Olive Garden is on then I am going to get starved late at night and get cravings. So even though it does not sound like fun, the truth of the matter is...it is another way for people to be manipulated.

I would rather do away with the smell-o-vision. I am one who is easily "allergic" to sense or smells - sweet smelling or foul smelling - my nose is rather particular and sensitive. I cannot even walk past bodyshop at shopping malls. Not to mention rubbish chutes. As for food, it makes me more hungry. I cannot afford to put on more weight. lol.

If they invented a "Smell-o-Vision" i doubt that I would purchase it. Man, I'm real weird about smells and I think there'd be more smells coming through that tv that I would hate then there would be that I'd like! Not to mention, what if you had a dog? I bet it would try to eat the television!
I mean, I don't watch stuff like "dirty jobs" or too many shows that would have so many bad smells...but I still don't think I could handle it. It is an interesting concept though and I might visit friends who had it once in a while just to get a whiff!

I just don't think that I would like to have it. I can think of so many things that I would not want to have on smell-o-vision. Like you said about the dirty jobs show especially when he is in the sewer. However it would be nice if I could smell the food when I watch Rachel Ray. Or when I watch the food channel but other than that I can't think of anything else I would want to smell. Well, I think it would be neat to be able to smell the ocean breeze or the flowers on the island shows.

EWW, I don't think so, at least not unless I was sure there would never be anything, but pleasant smells coming from it. And, about the food, I've gained too much weight already, I'b be afraid the food smell would have me wanting to eat way too often.
