Is there a need to know the reason for anything?

"When you are asked to do something, you need to know the reason why you are doing it and all the historical events behind it, then you are doing things right, otherwise, what you are doing is wrong."
The above is the pet statement of someone I knew. I heard this countless time again and again repeatedly repeating to anyone he come across. Of course, me included in his target.
Personally, I do not agree to his "preaching". He may be many many years my senior and I respect him for his years of accumulated wisdom. It has always peeved me as to why he keep insisting everyone must do his way and there is no room for discussion. He will be agitated when we seek to disagree.
For me, time is an important factor, thinkings have evolved, making money is one of the top priority. Who cares about historical events when the task can get done without knowing what has happened.
Friends, kindly share your views.
Do you agree with the above statement?
Was I wrong to disagree with the statement?
Am I missing out on something?
What's your take on the above statement?
Thanks for sharing:)

I don't necesarily agree totally with his statement but, can certainly see the value of knowing some history. We learn from past experience and use that knowledge to help make present and future decisions thus avoid repeating mistakes. I personally like to know why I am doing some things so I know if there is a good to reason to do them. As for people who always insist everything is done their way that can be very annoying and tiresome. I work with a woman like that, she just doesn't seem to think there can be more than one way to do things and hers is the only right way. I just do my best to ignore her and go about my business, main thing is the end result.

I would like to agree with the above statement. While performing a task, being a logical person, I would like to know the reasons for performing that task..historical background may or may not be necessary. I won't perform a task without any reasons, while in office or at home.

Well i think that in the basis that sentence is right,
a person should know why he is doing somthing, otherwish why is he doing it?
But you can not always on every little decision start and research the history of that.
There are simple things like deciding to you will sleep eight hours a day and not two, because you know that you will eventually get sick and your body will collapse if not doing it eventually.
But then again when you decide to do a health insurance you should know the history of insurance, the state of the health in your country and so on.
It always depends what decision you ought to be making.
