I've been using NIV ever since i became a bible-reading christian..until 1 day my brother came home from youth fellowship and told me "hey do you know some verses are missing in the NIV?".
And i was kinda "offended" that i don't want to believe..it's the Bible i know for 4 years you know?
So I looked up Matt.18:11 & Acts 8:37 (that's what he said) and i got the SURPRIZE OF MY LIFE?!!!
The verses are not there! But they're not technically missing..the verses are tucked in a little reference corner in the same page like footnotes.
But of course average readers won't notice that while reading the passages..rarely would you bother looking on the footnotes too. In other words you'd probably notice it.
Since then my life was never the same. I now read KJV. Anybody with similar experience?
you may want to check out this site for more details..

I grew up using the KJV, and I noticed something was different about the NIV besides the absence of Thees and Thous, but I could not put my finger on it. There was something wrong, so I looked through the internet and found several articles about the NIV It says the NIV is based on an older and better translation, but you have to consider that when a manuscript is used over and over again, it is destroyed and they have to write a new one. Therefore the Greek manuscript on which the Kjv was based on became worn out and they had to write another one.
I use the KJV even in my Church that uses the NIV. They can be excused because most of them are of Dutch descent and they did not grow up with a history of learning the English language. That is the danger that those whose native language may not be English or have another language spoken in their home may be led to believe the nIV is better than the KJV. Greetings cheezcake. I knew that the NIV lest out some verses and that is because it does not follow the Received Text but, if I am not mistaken, is based upon the most ancient manuscripts. Just over three decades ago I thought that was kind of good, but my mind has been changed and I believe it was changed by God Himself. However, I would like to give you an additional reason to stay away from the NIV - it is NOT true to the Greek in the New Testament. Please see my basic article on this at... http://relijournal.com/christianity/why-i-gave-up-on-the-new-international-version/

I agree with suspenseful on the foreign language issue: I am a Hungarian, and was bought up in an American international missionary school in Hungary. About half of all students were non-native english speakers (including myself). Many of the students hardly spoke any english (they had regular english language courses in the school). This is probably the reason that they used the NIV, we even had to memorize verses from the NIV. It is a serious sin that they have committed, maybe out of lack of knowledge; they ought to teach from NIV, and in cases of difference from KJV, should have shown the KJV verse. Thank you both for the information, I will also start to use the KJV from now on. I will also write an e-mail to the school.
