My mother called me this morning (I'm still in Florida on vacation) to tell me that my dog has hives all over her. She has been miserable all night and wouldn't let my mother sleep. I was so worried about her that I called my vet back home and they suggested we give her benedryl. Has anyone ever heard of giving a dog this?

I have had to give my Boxer benedryl. I am not sure if a bee bit her or a spider, but whatever it was, her face puffed up so bad, she could hardly see..My vet said to give her benedryl. I felt so sorry for her..we watched her around the clock and by midmorning she was back to normal..good luck with the hives..

Awwwwww...I love boxers just as much as I love pits- I'm glad to here that the benedryl cleared it up! I was super worried about Karma (my pit) just because I have never been through this- with a human or an animal (I personally do not suffer from allergies)- so this was all totally new to me.

Yes, she is a noodle head. My Akita is a goof ball also. I hope things are better now. I was all nervous when this happened to mine. Poor baby could barely see. Her lips were swollen too!

I have never heard of benedryl for dogs, but my dog has never had hives. Is this the first time your dog has had to be away from you thsi long? It could be caused by stress. When I went back to work after being home for a year my dog started chewing the pads off of her feet. I called the vet and they told me it was from anxiety over me being gone.

I had never heard of giving a dog benedryl eigther- but apparently according to my doctor- it is very common to give a dog benedryl when you think it might be an allergic reaction. Also I learned that there is no way to overdoes on benedryl (I was worried I would give her too much) The Vet said it will only do one of two things- make her extremelly tired- or extremelly hiper- I'm glad she was just tired ;)

My Pit Bull use to break out in hives ALL the time. The vets (yes, more than one) said that it was probably an allergy to a bug (like a spider). We also gave her benadryl and it helped some. It doesn't get rid of the hives, only the discomfort. HTH and that she's feeling better!

Yes, it's very common for the vet to recommend benedryl. In fact my Pit has the same problem. It seems like almost everytime we have been out fishing he develops hives. It seems he has and allergy to either a plant or a bug. The first time I was really worried and took him to the vet. The vet told me to give him Benedryl, I was nervous at first and watched him almost the whole day, he did just fine. While I'm by no means a vet, I have found it to be completely safe to give to a dog so long as you follow the directions given by your vet.

Yes- I was soooo worried at first- I have never had this happen with any of my past pets. I let her sleep in my bed (which is usually a no no) just because I was so worried and wanted to watch her all night. She is doing MUCH better now- her diet is back to normal and she hasn't broken totally out in them in two days- so thanks for all the support my mylot family- it made me feel better knowing I wasn't alone in this.
