While I was in North Carolina, it was very hot and humid. Even though I used a 50 strength sunscreen lotion I still got burned pretty good around my neck, face, ears and ankles. It is definitely not a good feeling. What is the best way to treat my sunburn so that I am not sore and achy? What is the best strength lotion to use? Not only am I a sore but am itchy as well.

Well this is twice today I have suggested the same thing for different problems. Weird huh? The best thing for sunburn is to get a spray bottle and put cider vinegar in it. Spray as offten as you need to to help with the burn, itch and the flaking. It works. We keep a bottle in our bathroom at all times. We use it for posion ivy too. Give it a try. It is cheap and you probably have it in your pantry.

that is what we always used when I was a kid. I haven't heard of it for poison ivy..... that is good to know.

Try taking a bath in lukewarm water in which you should pour a cup of baking soda or apple cider vinegar as this will cool down the skin. Compresses with cold green, black, calendula or St. John’s Wort will have the same cooling effect on the damaged skin.
Chamomile, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Rose hips and Buckthorn essential oils are also beneficial for the inflamed skin. They can be applied directly to the skin or added to the bath water.
Besides oils, there are some raw vegetables that sliced and applied to the burns will have a very soothing effect: potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, cold juice from lettuce leaves, corn starch and water paste etc.
What you consume when suffering from sunburns is also highly important, as drinking a lot of milk and food rich in vitamin C, E, betacarotene and Zinc will speed the recovery of the skin.

Hmm, not nice at all. I think that all of us at some time or another has been sunburnt. As always prevention is better than cure.
I've found that after-sun lotions that contain Aloe-vera are very effective but you should always check with your doctor that your sunburn isn't more than just that.
Good luck, hope you feel better soon.
Take care,
Cheers, p.

I used calamine lotion. I also used aloe from the plant when I could get it. Both work just as well. Before that I used to use Noxema, but it has been a long time since I got a sunburn. For some reason, I do not burn as much. Also splashing cold water on it would help.

OUCH! So sorry to hear 'bout that. We just got pretty burned ourselves on the 4th of July at one of our local lakes while fishin', but as others have already stated here, Aloe gel fer sure will ease at least some of yer pain. Something fortified with Vitamin D is also good for healing properties. OR, if ya wanna go with an old down home remedy, do what my Mama used to do, use good ole' Noxema cold creme. What I like about Aloe though, is that it is a natural healer, and it also cools and relieves the skin.
Good luck to you, hope you heal fast! :) We know what yer going through..:( Take care & Best wishes~ Katykat

I bought some of the gel that is called after sun gel and I put it in my refrigerator. It has alevera in it and it feels so good on my hot sunburn. And it is also good to try to prevent peeling. I apply this often and that is really about all I can do other than lay in front of a cool place.

If you can get hold of some aloe vera that will ease the burn quickly and effectively. I have a bottle of aloe vera lotion always to hand as my partner burns easily in the sun and despite using a high factor sun block he burns.

Have you tried noxema? that's what i used to use when i was a kid. worked pretty good. When you put your sunscreen on,did you use 2-3 tablespoons worth/ the reason i'm asking is because I was watching the news down here and they said a lot of people use sunscreen but don't use enough of it and get burned anyway.they said people should use at least 2-3 big tablespoons full.

Hi there. Ive had sunburn bad on my back, legs and back of the neck and boy is it painful, I found that taking a hot shower and then rubbing cooling gel on those areas, does do wonders. I know it sounds weird to put hot water on sun burn, but I also know this method is very effective... Well is for me anyway... Good luck with this one...

The best way to treat a sunburn is to use aloe. It is defentely not a good thing at all to get a sunburn. It feels miserable and it is not good for your skin. Another way to treat a sunburn is to avoid going outside during the late morning and early afternoon, when the sun angle is high in the sky. You should remain inside as much as possible until the sunburn goes away.

Hi there !
Sorry to hear bout yr sunburn,I am a medical student and I hope I can be of help to you.
Best way of treating any sunburn/burns is to apply potatao juice on the affectted part.Just rub a slice of cut potato on the parts and let dry,you will feel cool enough..No this is not JUST GRANDMAS REMEDY or somethin....its been tested and proven by millions worldwide,I have read case studies where burn victims reported relief and even whitening of the burn area, so you are welcome to be one those who benefit too!
Yeah ofcourse,a nice bath and aloe Vera also does help, keep the parts well moisturised with glycerine and next time....
TAKE CARE!!
Wish ya a speedy recovery!!

I would say my good Ken that you would need to treat it gently..;) Take some aloe vera and dab it on your burn ..don't smother it on as you will hurt yourself trying to cure yourself..Dab it on gently until your sun burn is all covered up.

What I have always used besides aloe for sunburns is noxema, just the regular fash wash stuff. It does wonders on sunburns. I haven't had a sunburn in years, but I remember the cooling relief from it.

Hi kgwat70 - 50+ sunscreen should be some major protection - it gives you 50 times your sun protection, so if, without sunscreen you burn in say 8 minutes, a 50+ will mean you will burn in around almost 7 hours. But you may still have to reapply it anyway before then if you sweat/swim it off.
Anyways, aloe is good - and I know this is goign to sound gross but when we were lttle and got burnt, my mum used to use natural yoghurt on us. Seemed to work, but it's messy.

The best treatment for a sunburn that I've found is...
take a warm to hot shower. Seriously. You don't have to stand in the spray, just let the steam envelope you for about 10 minutes. You need to open your pores so they can release the heat trapped in your skin. If you've got a steam room that'll work too.
After that you can take your cool shower or whatever, and your skin will feel much better. Then any kind of aloe gel will soothe any remaining issues as well as moisturizing your skin and helping with the itchy dryness.
