According to the US Food and Drug Administration one in five women have depression in the United States. To me, that sounds like a lot of women, not to mention the men who are depressed. Depression can be scary. It can be treated with medicine and or counseling. The Doctor will evaluate you to see what best fits your needs. There are many medications available today that women and men of the past have not had access too. Depression is nothing to be ashamed of. Women are more likely to get depressed than men are. To learn the signs of depression and more information. The US food and drug administration has this downloadable PDF pamplet. It has lots of information to keep you informed and help you decide if you are depressed and what to do about it if you are. Here is the link: http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/puboftheweek.htm

I do know what it is like to be depressed. I am on Prozac to help me with my depression. I am not ashamed of it and I am glad that I can get help. It hurts not only you but the people around you. I remember not wanting to do anything and if it wasn't for having children to take care of I would have done nothing. I still have bad days but I have more good days which is nice..

Good for you that you seeked help. I too am on meds. I take Zoloft but we are still increasing the dose. Havent got it right yet. I have been on a four other kinds before the zoloft. I know just how you feel. The problem with me was that I did not want anyone to know until I was really bad.

I have been on Prozac for about 14 years. I started on 10 mg. then went to 30 mg. It is the only thing I have been on. I am on 20 mg. daily now and I am doing fine. There was a time that I didn't know who I was anymore. It was like I became someone else and I didn't like it. I hope they get things worked out for you. thank you for this discussion.

I gained weight while I was on it..I was already heavy set but didn't even think that it could be causing me to gain more. I had put on at least 70 lbs. since I started it. I have since lost 156 lbs. and I am still losing. I just went back on the prozac a few months ago, since my weight loss. I weigh myself daily to make sure I am doing okay. I started losing the weight in 2005. I went off the prozac around Christmas time 2005. So I better watch if I do gain any weight. thank you.

I suffered from clinical depression after I lost my dad to liver cancer 3 years ago. I also had a touch of depression last year after I came home from the hospital after I'd had my back surgery. There were so many issues going on with my health, that it was hard not to be depressed. I recommend seeing your doctor and getting medication. You cannot fight it on your own, no matter who says you can. It will kill you...literally. The aches, pains and illnesses that come with depression can be deadly.

I know first handed what you are talking about. I am the kind of person who is a go getter. I work and I work hard at everything I do. I got till I could not get out of bed. I would be in bed days at a time. I would sleep for a few days then not sleep at all. I tried to get over it myself and got mad at myself when I was not able to do it. I finally ask a Dr for help. That was a low point in my life. I am tring really hard to get over it but the Dr said there was no way I could get over it by myself. Mine was a result of chronic pain that has lasted for over 21 years now... never goes away. They said they were suprised that I was not depressed and had anxiety attacks before now.

I do very much know what it is like to feel depressed as I went through depression for over a year. I had to take medical leave at work and had to spend time in outpatient and impatient care at a hospital because my depression would be so bad. I went through various kinds of medications. I am much better now and not on medications anymore. I try to keep myself busy and not stay in the house too much and do not spend too much time alone.

I was diagnosed with depression about 5 months ago and have been on Lexapro (10mg) since then which has made an amazing difference in my life. I'm sure there are lot's of people, like me, who have no idea that they are depressed. I still functioned fairly well but had a couple of days a week where I just felt like I was going to burst into tears for no reason and I just started going out socializing less ans less as I would get anxious to the point of feeling sick just thinking about it...even just hanging out with good friends

I suffer from depression. It is a constant battle. I do take medications. I take two different ones. I never use to be depressed, but sometimes circumstances can cause it. In addition to the upsetting situations in my life, I take a medication for my MS, which adds to the depression. It is horrible and a real illness. I empathize with others who also suffer from this debilitating health issue.

Yes my friend i know all to well what it feels like to be depressed. I was in a really bad depression for a very long time not to long ago. I am able to keep myself up alot better lately but i still can get down if i am not careful. I really think that in order to keep from being that depressed again i have to learn to take control of my life and also not to let things i have no control over bother me so much but that is easier said than done too but does not mean i will give up trying. I didnt like my self much when i was depressed and dont want to be like that again.

Good information however it might fit alot of people and all they need is a better diet or a vacation since they have been working too much. Most of the time with the commercials it seems like they are describing me. I know I am fine despite all the stuff I have been going through lately. I would hope that folks would take a moment to think before just taking a pill for this or that thing. For those that need it I hope it does them some good so that they can live full lives. Thank for sharing this.

I suppose there are much more depressed people in this running century, like before. Everybody is in hurry, everybody wants more and more. The depression is the sickness of modern humanity. I also suppose that the media has a big part of causing depression, because it always tells us what should we do, what is the "normal". And people accept it, and try to be "normal". But naturally we can not be as "normal" as we see in the media direction. I also suppose, that those people who live in little African villages, closed from the "civilization" does not suffer from depression. I think the depression can appear when the expectations are too much for someone, and he/she gets tired with them. That is why the depression is the sickness of weak people. Maybe there are more women suffering from it, because the expectations are more for a simple woman. (work hard, be pretty, household, children, also be the best b*tch for you partner, and be a super chef too) It is not easy, and if a woman feels that she is not good enough... or the worse if somebody unsatisfied with her! I think many women is only one step away from depression. Yes, the depression can be controlled with medicine, but our life can not. People should notice the real value of the life earlier. I think those people who can be happy seeing a simple leaf, or bug- how beautiful is the nature- will not be depressed, will they? So sometimes everybody should stop for a second to look around, and be thankful for the life. It would help before the trouble.

I am pretty sure I’m not depressed- I’m sure at one point in time I was depressed – but not for a long period of time- This is great for people who may have depression- I think a lot of us get sad and emotional- but don’t have depression.

Yes, I do. My doctor and I have been battling my depression for a couple of years now. It really got bad this past month. It is scary, but the meds do help, when you find the right ones, as does having someone to talk to. I hate the way it makes me feel. I should be happy and want to be happy but for some reason my body just doesn't cooperate. It's scary to feel so out of control. I'm doing better now, but the past two weeks were pretty bad. All I did was cry. My husband tried to help, wanted to know what was wrong. I didn't know what was wrong. I had no answer for why I was feeling the way I was. Some people think you should be able to just "Snap" out of it, but it doesn't work that way.

Most time, its my work..with ontime deliveries and work loads. I try to divert mind on music and i feel better. We need to manage depression, as it is part of life in busy world. But if we concentrate, we can manage it. I does it through my yoga, listening music and going out on vacation.

I have been depressed a few times in my life, but not major depression that last for long periods without quitting like these mentioned. I have had situations that have arose from family relationships to finances that have made me depressed for days, weeks and at one time a couple of months, but I would turn to God and He would give me strength. I do know a couple of people whose depression has lasted for years though and they won't accept help from me or go to a professional. It is a very sad situation to see. Thank you for the information.

Depression can be really debillitating .I have been suffering for the past seventeen years and been on and off medication a few times .When it`s at it`s worst i just can`t function at all .I find life so hard and have tried a few times to escape it. Medication does help to a certain extent but really only covers up the problem ,talking to a psychologist or some one that really understands and can guide you through different steps in controlling and living with depression is really important.I have not been on medication for a few months now and thats not because i don`t need it as i know i do but my problem is i do not have a dr here that i feel comfortable with .The last one i consulted ended up yelling at me because i took too many pills one day . I wish you well in your fight with depression and hope you can find a medication and the right people to help you .Take care and take each day as it comes.

I do agree with you being depressed can be a scary thing. I have been depressed only a couple of times in my life. I dont believe in taking medicine for that. I think we should talk to people about our problems and try to work them out. We have to be willing to open up and release our feelings. I have learned we have to make ourselves happy in life. Laughter is good. And trying to make other people around us happy to.

Yes I definitely know what it feels like. I have suffered with it for 10 years. It seems like everyone I talk to has suffered with it at some time in their life. I know my brother and my Dad both had it too. So they say it is hereditary. It is not an easy thing to deal with and sometimes it takes years before it is treated properly because doctor's have to try so many different meds till they find the right one.

I went through a major deprssiive episode when I divorced my first husband 24 years ago. I remember all too well the sleep issues, the lack of energy, and the mind-numbness that I felt. I was like a robot...going through the motions of being a single mom to two boys ages 3 and 2. I would drive to work and not even remember the trip. It was horrible. After a year (I took Desyrel) I snapped out of it, but it was the most miserable year of my life! I ended up getting my Masters in mental health nursing and LOVE it! Yes, people should not be ashamed to seek mental health care. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one is ashamed to say they have hyperension or diabetes! We shouldn't stop until our governement does something to obtain pairity in spending on mental health care !

Hi, Depression is nothing but a state of mind where it is surrounded by darkness, you feel the end of the world, wrapped in loneliness, unable to see any direction--- Well, the best thing to do is the moment these signs & thoughts start to appear, Force your mind to give a High-Jump.Start doing the things you simply love to do-(for eg.)Wear your favourite outfit & go & meet your best friend, go for an outing of your choice-beach, or disco etc thus lifting your mind up than allowing it to drown in the 'WeLl of DEPRESSION'.You & you alone are responsible for what you are for it is only you who makes the choice of being in a particular state. Thanks, www.creatingcolourfulfuture.com
