I have always wanted to buy and own my own bread making machine but was not sure whether this is a good investment. I love the smell of fresh bread being baked and have always wanted to make my own all the while adding my own ingredients too.
Do you own one? Do you use it all the time? Is it worth the investment? How often do you make one? It is time consuming? Are they easy to use? LOL sorry about all the questions!

Is it a lot more work having to make bread in a mixer? I have never seen it done so not sure how long or how much work is put into making it. You are very talented in the kitchen!

more effort i think, coz after the blender, i still do it by hand for a few minutes, unlike the breadmaker, the machine will do all the work for you,

I have a bread machine and I love it. I don't use it as often as I should. When I do use it, I tell myself I am going to use it more often. Fresh baked bread is the best, it smells so good too. The machines are easy to use, you put the ingredients in, plug it in, push the button, the machine does the rest. It mixes and kneads the dough, lets the dough rise, cooks it and even lets you know when its done. My mom bought my machine for me years ago for Christmas. Most of the machines make verticle loaves of bread. My machine makes a horizontal loaf of bread. Its a big loaf of bread. The slices of bread even fit in my toaster, I have a wide slot toaster.

That sounds like something I would like. Do you know the brand name for the one you have? I like the thought of the machine doing everything without me trying to figure it out i.e kneeding the dough etc.

Do you want to know what I do for fresh homemade bread? I go to the store and buy already prepared frozen bread dough. I bring it home, thaw it out, let it rise in front of the fireplace and put it in the oven. Voila! Fresh homemade bread! Beats all the work of kneading and stuff. I wouldn't spend the money on a piece of equipment I have no room for. Did I mention I need a kitchen makeover? LOL!

Really? already made dough and then just pop it in the oven? now that's what I'm talking about, the less work involved the more its good for me. I did not know that. I will check next time with our grocery store to see if they do sell them like that. Thanks for the tip Pat and I'll send the Fairy Godmother over for your kitchen makeover LOL

I have one, but it dosnt get used all the time, but when it does its well worth it...I love fresh bread with stews and casseroles and it just beautiful, or spread butter all over the hot bread and it melts is so delicious..
They are bulky things but worth it (for me anyway), and very simple to use.

I've been wondering this as well. I'm starting to replace store bought items with homemade items so I know what is in them. Bread is on my list of items. I've been researching bread machines, and trying to weigh if by making my bread will the machine eventually pay for itself.

I have had my machine for years and I love it. Nowadays I tend not to bake the bread in the machine itself as the loaf is too small and I do not like the hole that forms in the base.
Now, once it has been kneaded I transfer it to a bread tin, let it rise and then cook it in the oven. This makes a bigger loaf and so it isn't devoured by my family in seconds.
I also make pizza dough in it too.
I strongly advise you to get one, the bread is so nice and I never add salt so it is healthier too!!

I have one that I use when I want to make fresh bread or have a lot of veggies that I want to use to make a healthy veggie bread from. Just toss in the ingredients and it does the rest. I don't use mine as often and I would like to but the smell from it spreads through the entire house. Nothing better than serving a huge homemade meal along with some fresh baked bread.

My mom loves her bread machine. There are so many types of bread to make, so many mixes that take bread even further into the realm of yummy, LOL. The longest part is just waiting for the bread to be done. It's also handy if you want to do something nice for your neighbors, or if a person's church is having a dinner, they can take fresh baked bread. She just loves that thing. And so does my dad, because he gets to eat it. Good thing I don't live there, I'd have to fight him for the bread!

Oh no, don't ask me that, LOL. I'm forever running around doing so much and trying to squeeze in within the 24 hours time frame, I don't think I still have the time to create bread on my own. If you are into cooking and baking stuff, it might be a good investment for you since bread coming out freshly baked are heavenly and real delicious. :)

hahahahah! Well baking muffins yes but bread, have never tried it. I often buy fresh bread at a bakery shop down in Vienna whenever I get to it and the smell is so yummy. I am still deciding as one of the ladies here on mylot sent me a recipe so I am going to give that a go. If it works out ok for me and NOT too much work LOL I might not need it after all. Thanks Charms!

I bet it was. In Samoa they always make their bread fresh and the smell that comes out of the bakeries, yummmmy, so many customers waiting in line for a loaf or 2 sometimes more. Worth waiting for thats for sure.

I don’t have one, as there are only 3 of us in the family. I work full time that I don’t have much time to spend on making bread myself. And I find it cheaper to pay for a loaf of bread instead of self-making. Obviously the homemade bread will be healthier and fresher. If you have a big family, it will be a good investment to buy a bread maker to make bread at home and the bread maker will last quite a long time I assume.

There are only three of us in our family too but the thought of making my own bread, sounds scrumptuous :) One of the ladies on here sent me a bread making recipe without the use of the bread making machine so I am going to try that and if it works out, then I may not need to buy one :) thanks madona!

Well i personnally don't own one but my advice to you is, are you going to be able to bake bread at least once a week because that's how much you will have to if you want to make it worthwhile. I agree though that I like the smell of fresh bread in the morning but that's is only when I'm not making it. Are you waking up to the smell, or are you already up?

Good point, thats why i wanted to know how difficult it was to make it and how much time is put into it as I have never made bread before. When we were living in Samoa I would walk to the bread shop and buy fresh hot bread everday and in the evenings too.

I don't own one but like you, I've always wondered the same things about them. I've thought about buying one a lot lately and wonder if in the long run it saves you money? One thing is for sure... it would not help my diet one bit. I love bread, to be able to make fresh bread whenever I wanted might not be the best idea, lol.

I don't think they are worth buying. I have one and never use it, I make my bread by hand and find that it doesn't take much longer then if I was to make it by machine. I use my kitchen aid mixer to make the dough and then depending on the type of bread, sometimes I make batter bread, I put it right into the pans or knead the dough for 10 minutes. I find the bread is much nicer then that from a machine. My mother-in-law uses a machine all the time, the last time she stayed with us she asked my husband where we buy our bread because she thought it was so good, he told her we don't buy bread that I make it and freeze the extra loafs.

I love mine. I use it all the time, becasue I like to make the bread with oat bran and some flax seeds added. It's much better than store bought, and very easy. If you have the counter space, and it can sit out in eyesight, you will use it all the time. If you have to drag it out though, you won't.

It would be worth it if your family likes homemade bread, maddysmommy. I wanted one a long time ago, but couldn't afford one at the time. I remember how my aunt used to make fresh bread and it smelled so good. I could happily eat just bread and butter, LOL. From what I've heard they are not too time-consuming any more. They have made a lot of improvements on them in recent years. Happy baking.

yes! i love the smell of freshly baked bread. There's something so homey in that smell.
I don't own a bread maker. one of my colleagues does, and sometimes she brings in freshly baked bread for us. there are these uber cool machines that allow you to time it, such that the baking only starts in the middle of the night, and when you arise, it's to the smell or warm toasty bread. yum. otherwise you can only bake late in the night for the next morning, or set the alarm to wake up early to get bread ready for breakfast (think it takes a couple of hours).
i think they are easy to use. apparently just throw in all the ingredients (flour water seeds) and the machine does the magic!

By all means buy one. Love yourself . I have bought one recently for RM 249 - Empress brand and for the last 2 months I have not regretted yet for buying it because it makes great breads for me . I am now using it on alternate days. It is not time consuming at all, actually it is saving me a lot of time since the machine will do all the knaeding, proofing and baking..go to my blog http://chriskong57.blogspot and see for yourself lovely breads that I have baked.

I bought one a few years back coz i was so envious of my boss' bread machine (she brought in fresh bread to work).. Is it easy to use?? Heck yes! just dump the stuff in and wait.. but i eventually realized that during the rising phase, the bread came out better if i did some extra manual kneading. Downside to it, now that i make my own bread with my bare hands, is that it takes too damn long! the normal cycle in my machine was three hours! When i bake bread now, it's usually ready in an hour (additional half hour, if i give it time to rise!). SO what's my machine doing now? It's just sitting in the back room as i prefer to do all the kneading now coz i know the exact consistency and texture i want in my breads :)
