Diamonds are a girl's best friend?

Why is it that diamonds are the most sought after gem? I don't get it. To me, there are many other gems that are far more beautiful. Especially after reading the book Blood Diamonds (I have not seen the movie yet) that really put me off to diamonds. There are other beautiful stones, such as tanzanite, topazes, and many others. Why do you love diamonds so much?
They are just clear stones to me. They do sparkle and look great, but what do you think? Why are diamonds a girl's best friend? And where did this saying come from?

I think gold ornaments are also pretty. I like diamonds but i never brought a diamond ornament till today. Diamond is not good for those who consider investing in gold better. Diamonds are good but not that worth to take all the trouble
