Sometimes having a great idea just isn't enough!

It's a struggle trying to succeed at the best of times, but when you've got no ideas and nothing new to offer the world, it's almost impossible.
Well, theoretically that's what it should be like. But nowadays I'm really starting to doubt that. It seems as if just having a good idea doesn't really set you apart from those who don't have any ideas.
A good idea means little unless others know about it.
And that's where promotion, advertising and marketing come in to the equation.
The problem is that you may have the best invention or idea, yet if it's relatively unknown, then you might as well have not thought it up.
It's not just something that has happened in the world only recently, because things like this have been happening forever. Think about the many people who invented things years ago, only to have their inventions stolen by people in a better position than them, because they couldn't market their product themselves.
It makes you wonder what the point is.
My advice to people wanting to start up a business or whatever, is to try to find what isn't there. I know it sounds a bit oxymoronic, but it makes perfect sense. If there is a lack of something online or in the world in general, then YOU be the one to fill the space.
Except, that rule doesn't work most times if you don't get enough exposure.
So what do you do?
(This isn't a hypothetical question, I really want some answers, lol).

This post has a good point to ponder. I have just started not very long into the online business venture. Lots of factors needed to be considered of course. It is right to say that it is not just the idea or plan that will work success.
For me, I learned that whatever businesses I want to get involved in, no point reading too much on the company's reputation as quoted by themselves. What is more important would be who are their partners e.g. suppliers, links, associates, etc.
No company will tell you that they are not good. All company will tell you how well they are doing. Take a look at who their partners are, that will indicate to you the real reputation of the company.
