I received an e-mail alert today from a good friend- warning me about drinking bottled water- Here is the message:
Importance: High Subject: Drinking
Bottled Water Kept in Car ....a friend whose mother was recently
diagnosed with breast cancer. The doctor told her: women should not
drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The doctor said that
the heat and the plastic of the bottle have certain chemicals that can
lead to breast cancer. So please be careful and do not drink bottled
water that has been left in a car, and pass this on to all the women in
your life. This information is the kind we need to know and be aware and
just might save us!!!! The heat causes toxins from the plastic to leak
into the water and they have found these toxins in breast tissue. Use a
stainless steel Canteen or a glass bottle when you can!!!
Do you believe this? Has anyone heard this prior to this? I'm scared- I drink bottled water all the time- and the fact is I leave mine in the car when I run into work and then when I get home again hours later- I throw it back into the fridge to cool and drink it again- I do this all the time- Breast cancer is always something that frightened me- My grandma had it as a young woman-
What do we all think about this? Is it believable?? Proven anywhere?
Please share your thoughts!

This is the site I always use to check things out to see if they are true or false.

I have been hearing many such cases about the incorrect usage of the bottled water. With my knowledge, I should say Bottled water are only for the immediate usage and not for the store and use purposes. Once open, bottled water should be consumed immediately and the bottle to be broken out. Some of my friends keep the used up bottles for filling up water later, but I have been suggesting to avoid that. Even this has been mentioned at the sides of the bottle also. Please be aware and beware.

It was just a couple of days ago that I read in the news that some are banning bottled water. The big reason was an environmental issue, because manufacturing those bottles to put the water in was supposedly harmful for the environment, as well as fuel consumption needed to ship them. The disposed bottles were also supposedly adding to the problem.
One of the reasons was that if bottled water sits around for a certain period of time, even un-opened, it should not be consumed. It is not known how long the water is stored in the bottle from the time it leaves the factory & gets to the store, or how long it had been sitting on the store shelf.
About causing cancer, I cannot verify or dispute this one. At one time, a chemical that made plastics flexible, such as that of the bottle to store water in, or even any kind of fluid was said to cause cancer. I don't know if it is used about today's plastics. If someone just decided to spread that news about bottled water causing cancer without actually checking, that person probably got the idea from knowing about that chemical.

Hi I seen where this was not true, I just wonder why people get off on creating such tails. I think some are created cause they really do think of them as true, but I have seen many that you can tell were just made up to be mean. Silly isn't?

I got something like that last year but it was about microwaving food in plastic containers....my thought was that if you shouldn't do why do all the companies still sell them. I heard you can check out stuff on snopes.com to see if its true or not.

I read few articles saying CONTRARY to your information. The article further reports that "In the United States, plastic water bottles are regulated by the FDA as "food contact substances" and held to the same safety standards as food additives.
This means, among other things, that the FDA has reviewed test data on the safety of the plastics used in water bottles -- including the potential for hazardous chemicals leaching or "migrating" from the plastic into the water -- and established that they pose no significant risk to human health. The water itself is also tested and must meet basic quality standards similar to those set by the Environmental Protection Agency for public drinking water.
That is not to say that bottled water is absolutely free of contaminants, nor that chemical leaching never takes place. Studies done on water bottled in FDA-approved polyethylene terephthalate (PET), for example, did find trace amounts of potentially hazardous substances believed to have migrated from the plastic. The important point to take away, however, is that these amounts were very small and well within the safety limits set by FDA and EPA regulators.
According to Dr. Rolf Halden of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, consumers face a much greater risk from potential exposure to MICROBIAL CONTAMINANTS in bottled water -- germs, to you and me -- than from chemical ones."

Yes, I have heard this before. Here in Texas where it can get so hot during the summer the bottle can heat up in just 10 minutes when left in the car.
I too have heard that there was never conclusive evidence about this report. I admit I have not done any research on it. I take the better safe than sorry approach.
I tend to believe it could be true myself. It just makes since to me.

I have heard a similar statement like this a couple of months ago in the news. But it was regarding the dangers of using or reusing plastic bottles. I guess these two are related in some way. Yes, we all know that plastic containers do contain ingredients which prove harmful to the body. These are intended for one-time use only and should not be recycled. But honestly, I am guilty of this offense, too. The main reason is that these containers are very handy. It's not a big mistake to either loose them or leave them behind, I think.
But two years ago, when I first received an e-mail regarding its negative effects on health, I switched to using a glass in the office rather than the bottled water.
Even if this issue - bottled water left in a car causes cancer - is not proven yet, it's better to be safe than sorry, isn't it?!

Hi,
I have never actually heard that before. It is kind of scary because my daughters and I leave bottled water in the car to come back to drink later all the time. It sort of makes sense though when you think of the chemicals which are used to make plastic and what heat in turn does to plastic. These days it sure seems like just about anything leads to cancer. :(
cheers,

I haven't heard about leaving it the car, but I have heard that freezing the water in the bottle is not good. Either way, I limit my drinking water from tap and bottle and prefer to have it all filtered before consuming.

I dont know about the other stuff with bottled water. I do know as long as you do not open the water, it will be ok to drink even if it is left in a hot car. Now if the bottled water is open and it is left in a hot car it can harbor things that can make you sick. Water is bottled with Ozone and that is what keeps it from turning green if it is left un open.

science is a wide range body of knowledge-if there is scientific proof that this is true, then I would be glad to see it published in the world journal of science, but until this is done, I want to consider this an interesting hearsay that requires more infor to back it up!

A few years back a local woman and her son drank from a bottle of water that she just kept refilling and never rinsed out. The water made her and her son ill. I believe that there were bacteria that grew in the bottle and when it was warm in the car, it grew more.

This has been scientifically proven. So if you can, use bottled water instead. o consume the water you take and do not re=use the plastic container again. If you can better pack yourself water from home.

I am really gettting concerned with all the recalls and stories of bad food and drink. I think we may have to go back to raising all our food. I am not even going to ask "what is next"
