Computer Virus Please HELP!!!!!

I have some computer troubles. Its been saying that i have a virus and the only thing I can do is download software that will cost money ( which I don't have). Can you help? I've been hearing about fox ware or something like that do you have any suggestions aboutfree protection that I ca download?
