Usually every couple month i rent that carpet steamer from the groceries stores near me. I got 2 daughters that constantly spill drinks on my carpet. And that carpet steamer really works. And it's cheaper than call the carpet cleaner guy. I can clean the carpeting in my entire house.

It all depends on the type of stain, type of carpet, how large it is and how long the stain has been there. Resolve makes a great powdered carpet cleaner that woks on most organic / food stains but if it is something else like grease or oil, you will have to get something industrial for it.
