Does your cat respond to the word, "No!"

If I see my cat, Waffles, getting too close to Mimi, my other cat, I say, "No!" to Waffles, and gently move her away. Mimi is still getting acclimated and is not ready for any new friends, animals or humans, just yet. So far, Waffles obeys and moves away from the room. My Columbus, however, is a bit more stubborn, in that he will return and have to hear me tell him "No" again. But he moves away as well. I'd like to know if you use the word "No" with your cat in order to ward off potential problems, and the results if you do use that word.

Cats don't actually understand your words. What they respond to is your tone of voice.

I agree with you, they respond to the tone of the voice not the words unlike dogs.

Some of my cats seem to know alot of stuff that I say. If I say" momma's got the foody's", several will come running. The laggers will come when they start to smell it.

We use the word no with all the critters, but I agree that for the cats it's a response more to tone than to word. It works, though!
