This is the very first time I've grown sweet corn. They are looking great i think. I even have a few tassles already. Now what I need to know is when is it time to pick the ears off? I have no idea whatsoever as even when I buy it from the grocery store I just shuck a little husk away to see what it looks like. So I never paid attention to the appearance of the ear at the stores. Let me know roughly how long it takes from the time the husk shows till an ear is ripe also. Thanks in advance. HAHAHAHA! I don't know all about gardening. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

When the silk at the end of the ear gets brown and starts to dry out. If you are still not sure you can take a tiny peak at the ear. Don't worry you will know, let it grow and soon you will be eating it.

I agree this is the best way, i will also peek around the silks from time to time to watch for and remove any caterpillars that found their way to the corn, and kill them

I forgot to mention that I viewed your corn photo, rated it & wrote a comment.

My brother and I grew sweet corn a couple of years ago. When the ears start getting bit big (8" there abouts) peel back a little of the covering BEFORE you pick the ear. Of course the stalks should be over your head by then too. You can tell by looking at it if it's ready. I can't remember exactly how long that took. I think we planted in May that year, or late May, and by August we were eating the corn, along with our beets, squash, tomatoes, onions..what a salad. The kernels will be tender if you sort of poke it, mainly tho' we could tell by looking.

How could I forget about the silk? But we still checked an individual ear.

Since this is my first time for sweet corn as well, I'll be keeping an eye on your discussion to see when it's time to pick mine as well. lol Thanks for starting this post, Grandpa Bob.

Well when we grow corn we feel the ears- when they start to fill out- and they feel firm and long - you can pick one and look at it- It takes a bit before it is ready- But these look great- let them go for a bit!

When the silk starts to turn brown and you can peel back the husk a little ways and see nice-looking kernels. You don't have to shuck the whole thing. I'm not sure of the length of the growing season where you are. Sorry :(
