My husband and I recently bought a farm and are just getting started raising chickens and turkeys. They are so much fun! We really enjoy it... so far. What have your experiences been? (and as an FYI, we are NOT confining our chickens and turkeys, they are pasture raised, and I even bring them into my garden to let them eat bugs. They get to live a very healthy and happy life)

My family raised chickens when I was growing up. I would sell eggs to teachers at the local schools, which was profitable. The deliveries were easy and collecting money, so it was a great way to earn money as a teenager.
We had one male turkey, who would follow my mother around the farm. It was so funny to watch, as our male peacock would follow also. The two males were great "watchdogs" and when anyone would walk to my mother they would stand in front of her. She would tell them its safe and this would happen anytime somebody new came to the farm.
I remember one poor mailman that became so scared that he ran for his mail truck. The next day our regular mail man was back and he had both days of mail. When the new mail man went back to the office he told everyone about the big turkey and peacock and the entire office knew which farm didn't get any mail. I laughed so hard hearing that he told everyone. The new mail man did come back to our place after being informed that they were pets of my mothers and wouldn't harm him. My mother just didn't see the new mail man the first time, as she had her back turned and this time he honked to let her know he had arrived.

I have raised chickens for sale of eggs and butchered them for eating as well. You will wish to lock them up each night and release them during the day. Also plenty of bushes and items to get under if they see a hawk that could come flying by to scope out the place and you little friends. During heat they need to be kept as cool as possible and with plenty of water. You will lose them if you don't. I wish you luck
Turkeys are bit more difficult and there are magazines, books and sites that you can read and learn all about things to make life easier for all of you.

My grandmother used to raised chicken when she was young. At that time my father was still schooling. My grandmother told me that the first thing she did in the morning was to feed the chicken. She gave them paddy, and sometimes when there was left-over rice she would give them that too. During festivals, my grandmother didn't have to go to the market to buy chicken, because she had so many at home. It was a wonderful memory for her and I like the thinking of raising chicken. Maybe one day I'll raise them myself and enjoy their presence at my yard.

Yes im raising 5 chickens right now as pets. i used to have two turkeys as babies and two quails. we couldnt keep the turkeys and quails becaus the neighbors complained. Thats great that they're on a pasture! Mine are kept in my garden but they jump in the cage anyway. xD i love them. Chickens are my favorite animals besides cats which i also have. ;)
