Another Tax Hike on Cigarettes

I know that many of you are nonsmokers and God bless you for that. I'm still mad as a hornet because I am a smoker and they keep raising the taxes on cigarettes on the premise that the funds are needed to help with education. How can this be so when they just voted to close down a number of area schools, eliminate busing and many extra-curicular activities. I think it is all a part of the plot to squeeze smokers out of every penny they can get. I maintain that if smoking is as dangerous as they say, why doesn't the government just ban it like it does everything else? The answer is clear; if they were to ban smoking, where would they get all the money to stuff into their own greedy pockets?

Its absolutely pathetic..Its a huge revenue raiser for the government..They know that people will buy ciggies no matter what, so why not bump up the price every other day...

y dont u look at this way that ur smoking is not only harming u but people around u too, smokin is one of the major causes for cancer & lung ailments and govt needs money to build hospitals for curing people; so they charge the smokers for the treatment of diseases caused by smoking

Smoking is not the only cause of lung diseases and cancers. There are many pollutants in the air that we breathe in daily that can cause cancer and lung diseases. Not only that, a person could live in a bubble his/her life where no polluted air got in, did not smoke a day in his/her life and still end up with cancer or some sort of lung disease if it was in the persons family make up that these sort of things were prevailant in. It's by a smoker's own right to smoke, just as it is for a person not to smoke. Smokers shouldn't be punished for a decision they made for themselves. And if smoking truly bothers someone that bad they can stop being around smokers, it's as simple as that.

your argument would have stood firm if the smokers adhered to the law of not smoking in public places, but we see that it isnot follwed any where so the non smokers pay the price for what is being by someone else.i must remind you that "passive smoking is equally injurious to health".

I am not a smoker but I agree with you wholeheartly. I think that the smokers are being picked on by a government that likes the money they make from these people. They ban them from smoking in public places but they charge them a ridiculous price for the things. I don't believe all of these reports that say that the biggest cause of cancer is from smoking. I think it comes from a lot of the additives and stuff that is put in our food. I am sure the government will never say that though.
