My main instrument is Guitar but I can play Doubler Bass reasonably. I like the slap technique used by the Rockabilly players such as Lee rocker from The Stray Cats, but I do also like walking bass lines, it sounds great in the old 50's Rhythm & blues stuff such as T Bone Walker.
I chose the guitar over Double Bass simply because I started to learn at a young age & Double Basses were very expensive back then, when I eventually started playing in bands we always had a Double Bassist, so I'd study them & pick some tips up from those guys.
I'm guessing by your leaning towards Jazz, you'll be into the likes of Charlie Mingus right?

That's very cool. It sounds like we have similar tastes. I really love both the slapping of the bass in rockabilly bands and the walking bass lines in jazz and R&B. I picked up the upright because I have a good friend who is an excellent jazz bassist and I help him carry his bass around all the time. I thought, "I might as well learn how to play it." So I did. His name is Buddy Catlett. He's performed with a lot of the greats (including Quincy Jones, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and more). His site is at www.myspace.com/buddycatlett. And, yes! Double basses are so expensive!! I've been renting one, but the rental goes toward the purchase of it (at least for a year). Plus the lessons are also expensive. And, I checked out that website. I love it! Thanks for sharing.

It's always great meeting fellow musicians, & it's extremely rare you come across people into double bass these days. Lee Rocker has his Bases made by a company called King Double Bass, they have a MySpace site which is worth checking out, as some of the bases are so beautiful.

Hope you enjoy it

Hey thanks for sharing that site. I took a look at it and those basses are really cool. Yet another thing I'll have to save up for...

Bass guitar (or any bass), and piano are probably my two favorite instruments. Although, I also am partial to guitar (preferably acoustic), ukulele (baritone and regular), any saxophone (preferably alto/tenor), and percussion. I'm also a music major in college, and am obviously partial to the instruments I play, which I just conveniently listed above for you. =)

I've never actually played the guitar, just the upright bass. And, although I have a ukulele, I haven't learned how to play it yet. I love the bass though, and I love jazz!

I'd recommend the baritone ukulele if you're familiar with playing a guitar. It's tuned to the top four strings of a typically tuned guitar, but provides a much different sound. It's currently my favorite instrument to fiddle around with, though I take bass and guitar playing the most seriously, as I'm a member of my university's jazz guitar ensemble, and play bass in two small bands.

I have a flute at home, but I haven't learned how to play it yet. I only took a couple of lessons. I'm hoping to learn it later on. I love South Indian classical music! That's so cool. I like to sing too (and I'm not professional either). I sing some jazz tunes. I actually have a music page on MySpace.com/makelovetomeorchestra. Music is also a big part of my life. I don't know what I'd do without it! My life would be pretty empty, I think.

You don't have to be a musician to appreciate instruments. The bongos are cool. I play some piano too. The piano is a great instrument as well because it can sound great on its own as well as with other instruments, and there's so much you can do with it. You must be quite proud of your daughter.

Yes I am very proud of her. She plans to get a music degree when she finishes school next year....her teacher says she has a natural talent for composing and arranging music along with actually playing it. She also plays some guitar, harmonica and trumpet.

My favorite is the Flute- the only reason is that it is the instrument that my daughter plays in band at school. She is great at it- and I’m used to hearing it- I don’t play any and have no intention to learn any- I’m quite happy listening to her. Good luck learning-
