Its united we stand divided we fall you got the saying wrong that is why you can't understand it because it makes no sense. united we stand means as a group we can overcome all adversity. Divided we fall means if you divide the group or cause it to splinter then it can be conquered little by little.

It is for the culprits to say this; When India was being ruled by Britishers, they used to divide them people in order to gain power. For them your statement is correct. But in practice, people use the saying as: divided we fall, united we stand. it IS the slogan of most of the unions and in fact it can be said about people who are fighting for a cuase. If the members are all divided, then they tend to lose the aim of the group. If they are united, their strength is noticed, their morale will be high and whatever they touch they make success of it. That is the meaning.
