I'm in the same boat as you. Seems to be more thinking about the writing than the writing itself. I am writing a fiction piece, but using experiences from my life and around me to bulk it up. I've always been told to start with what you know and then research to find the rest. As for how long? Been over 2 years since I started and only got about 3 chapters done. Inspiration comes from experience, so go and try some new things and see if they get the inspiration spark going again.

I've written several books. I wrote a nonfiction book on relationships, several poetry collections, my autobiography, and others. If you need help, consider having a co-author--someone who writes with you. Otherwise, try writing the book--if it's nonfiction--as separate articles. Then, make each article a chapter. This is what works for me.

I wrote a book on Danish cooking, a couple of years ago. It's called "Tak For Mad" (Danish for "thanks for the food") and can be found at http://www.lulu.com Just type in the title in the search, and it'll come right up.

I'm like you and have lots of stuff I want to write about. However, I don't have enough to fill an entire book either. You can always start with an ebook. They can be much shorter in length. You can also write reports or articles. I've seen lots of books that were once a collection of articles or smaller reports. It all depends on what type of book you are wanting to write.
