I Think I Pulled A Muscle In My Neck

It hurts when I turn my head right and a pain shoots down my right shoulder. I have had a sore neck before but not where the pain shoots down my right side. I have a heat pack but its for my lower back and it doesn't sit properly on my right shoulder, so I am not sure what else I can do. I tried massaging it with baby oil and it has helped somewhat. When I sit up and lean against the wall it hurts too.
I was moving our furniture around yesterday afternoon and may have done it then, but I'm not too sure as I only felt it his morning. I remember a post on someone with a stiff neck and I read there were some good suggestions but I can't remember who wrote the discussion. Any suggestions would be welcomed thanks.

If you have a massage head on your shower, try using that, but make sure you don't put it directly onto the arteries going up your neck. you could also try that heat pack along your shoulder and neck as it may be a muscle that goes right down your shoulder that is strained. If not, dampen a hand towel with hot water, put it into a plastic bag then wrap that in a face cloth, and put that on your neck as a temporary hot pack

I don't have a massage head on our shower but I think I will try the heat pack again. If that doesn't stay on properly then I'm going to try the hand towel suggestion, thats a great one. Thanks Judy.

Your hand towel suggestion is way better than using a normal heat pack. Even though it does eventually cool down all I have to do is reboil the water and its hot again. That has really helped, thanks again.

Heat works best in the first 24 hours. AFter that, cold helps more! To get heat to stay on, moisten a handtowel or somthing and place it in the microwave. Make it rather hot. Then place that on the area (this must be over a shirt or something so as to not burn the skins) The combincaiton of the heat and moisture is great as it penetrates teh skin better. Some physicians recommend alternating heat and cold. When you start the cold packs, do remember it is 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off, so that little constricted blood vessels have a chance to refill! The cold helps to remove inflammation at the area and thusly reduce swelling around the inflammed pulled muscle or whatever you injured! Of course, an antiinflammatory such as Motrin helps in addition to the heat/cold.

You are right that cold is the first treatment for an acute injury. For instance an athlete who has fallen during a game with a sprained ankle or somehing. I am working on the assumption that her 'injury' occured yesterday when moving furniture. That is why I went with the heat first...to loosen up that stiff joint/muscle group. Then the cold to move out the inflammation. But yes, for acute injury the RICE mnemoic is used: rest, ice, constrict, elevate.

Hi nurse, I agree to the alternating hot and cold treatment. However, I thought the first 24 hours should be applying cold treatment. That's to cool down any imflammation there may be? The hot treatment will make it more imflammed? I am not sure how true is this as I was personally surprised when I heard this. I found the reason logical.

I've been applying heat treatment since yesterday and it has helped somewhat. I still feel a pull or pain on by back by my shoulder and that still hurts a little. I will begin to try the cold treatments tonight. Thank you crazynurse and whyaskq!

Thank you cher913. I have been applying a towel heat pack for the last two days and it has helped. I have also used cold treatments and used a deep heat cream that have also seem to help. There is still a slight pinch/pull there but its not as bad as it was two days ago. Thanks for responding.

Just so coincidental we seem to have some coincidences. I think I have sprained my shoulder two weeks ago. My instructor has "fixed" it for me and I do not feel the pain. However, on the next morning, the pain came from the neck. Being a Reiki channel myself, I reiki myself throughout the night and it seems ok. I complemented it with cold water shower on the shoulder and neck.
It seems fine until 2 days ago. I did some neck exercise yesterday morning and this morning, I nearly cannot turn my head. I attribute it to the rainy season these 2 days. I just rub whatever balm I can find. lol. Hope it will be ok tomorrow morning.
And thanks for posting this discussion, I guess I can get some tips from this discussion too :p

I found in our cupboards a voltaren gel that my husband uses to soothe his gout so i am going to try that. It's kind of hard to rub it on my back as its hard to reach LOL I have been applying the heat treatment and that has worked somewhat. I will try the cold treatment tonight. Thanks whyask and you feel better too. I am going to rest now.

the best thing is that while sleeping use a long narrow pillow that would just fit between ur neck. If you give proper rest to your neck i think it will get fine. don't strain the neck too much as it will increase the pain. If nothing works, pls go to a doctor. Take care

Mi Madmommy :). Sounds prteey posile you've pulled a muscle in your neck doing the furniture. A good advice from Denmark. Try get hold on some tiger balsam or pure mint oil. Dont know about your place but here we would get it at the pharmasy. If you get hold on some, use just a tiny bit, as it is pretty strong, and smear it on the sore part of your neck. Both will warm up the muscles in your neck and make it more flexible again. Hope you get better soon :)

Thanks disvachic! I think your right, it is a pinched nerve as opposed to a pulled muscle. It is getting a lot better but still feel that pull or pinch. At least I am able to move about and sit for a little longer. I will keep applying cold and heat packs today and if it still pinching, then its off to the doctors. Thanks again.

My husband often suffer from neck and back pain too. I suggest using YOKO-YOKO, a type of massage hot oil to ease the pain around your shoulder. It really helps, you can try it. In my place this product can be found in almost every grocery stores, even in rural areas. I hope the product is within your easy reach. Good luck.

Im not sure if they sell that here but I can always find out. I have a similar deep heat type cream, not so much oil but cream and when massaged into the area it seems to really help. Thanks for your response ladysurvivor.

Aww sweetheart I am sorry to hear that - it is an awful place to pull a muscle - you never realise how much you move your neck until it feels that bad! I know I am a bit late into the discussion - I haven't really been here for a couple of days so I hope that you are already feeling better! If not heat is good but so is cold - a bit of heat alternated with cold can help! You can either use heat pads and ice packs, or heat and freeze sprays! If it is not getting any better in the next day or two I would say that a visit to your doctor may be in order! xxx

Feeling so much better today. It still hurts a little so i will keep applying both the cold and hot treatment. I decided to spend some time away from the keyboard as it hurts sitting up. I will see how I got over the next day or two and if I need to will see the doctor. I also have a deep heat cream that seemed to help as we. Thanks so much mummymo for your comment :)

I posted the discussion a few days ago, maddysmommy, and I did receive a lot of good suggestions. But, in your case I think you should see a doctor. It could be a pinched nerve. If that's the case massage won't help.

Thanks worldwise and I am sorry that i posted this even though you did a few days ago. I was not sure who did as I remembered it and couldn't be bothered finding it again. It does feel a lot better with the heat treatment and tonight I will apply some ice/cold treatment. If it doesn't get better then I will see the doctor. I keep on resting and take breaks from using the computer too as it hurts a little to sit up. Thanks again.

Hello there maddysmom!
I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing neck pains. As you are aware I am not a doctor…lol..but I do want to share my opinion with you. Here in our custom we call the neck pain that you are experiencing (lengai).
I am only assuming that this is what you have because you mentioned that you woke up this morning with the neck pain. If that is the case then it was most likely caused by your sleeping position on your pillow. Although you may have felt really comfortable when you lied down to sleep, you neck was not.
The only way we get rid of the (lengai) neck pain is by sleeping two nights without a pillow and lying on our stomach. I really hope this helps you, because it is all I can share. Another thing you should not use baby oil, coconut oil works much better in easing the pain but you should not massage it, just put the coconut oil and let it be, I know that the pain is too much at times but sometimes if you massage it, it can actually get worse.
Good Luck, I hope you feel better soon!

Thank you liyan for your comment. I do feel a lot better after using the hot towel heat pack method. The pain is more or less down my back on the right side, off the shoulder so I have been sitting straight up in my chair. As soon as I slouch then the pain comes back. I wish I had coconut oil, I have run out but will see if they sell it here in USA. As for the massaging, you are right about that, I was told never to massage my sprained ankle because it would get worse, maybe I shouldnt with my neck. If only my husband was home just to rub the oil on my back where the pain is. The heat pack has helped bigtime, but I will try not to sleep with a pillow tonight and on my stomach. Thanks so much my friend. I think I will call it quits for the night, its 2am in the morning and my tummy is rumbling but I don't want to eat. I better get some sleep. Take care!

I had a pinched nerve in my neck several months ago and it was terrible. I don't even know how I did it. I was uncomfortable every way I tried to sit or lay. Maybe you have a pinched nerve. I don't think there is anything a doctor can do, but don't quote me on that. I used Biofreeze and it helped some and I used a heating pad at times. you have to get Biofreeze from a doctor( had a sample from a friend), but I think there is a version in Wal-Mart that says to compare it to Biofreeze. I hope you feel better soon!:)

Thank you Flight84 - it seems I might have a pinch nerve because I feel it the pain everytime i move, sit up, even lay down except when I am on my tummy which is weird because with putting my head one way or the other you would think it would pull and hurt. I was able to rest alot to day and apply heat pac. I do have a deep heating cream that I may apply to see if that will work, then later on apply some cold treatment. I am going to take a break from using the computer - its not comfortable either when I type. thanks for the suggestions.

Hi!Well, if it is only a Muscle-Pull, Rub VOVERAN-GEl in the affected area, & leave it for sometime. After an hour, dip a towel in hot water & wipe a few times dipping in hot water alternately. After half an hour, take some rock-salt & bundle it in a muslin cloth, heat it in a pan &alternately keep on the affected area. After an hour, rub with some ice-cubes & wipe dry.
Remember to keep a proper pillow when you sleep.I am sure this would really work or else you may have to see a DOCTOR.
Thanks,

Thanks for the advice bharatibajaj. I don't have voveran gel but i do have something similar for deep heating treatment. I will try that. I will keep applying the heat packs and then apply cold treatment later tonight.
