Knocked Up... I know it's kind of old, but...

For those of you who watched the movie Knocked Up, I am curious about something.
Did you notice that they didn't say the word abortion in it the entire time? The closest they came was "Shmish Smortion" or something...
I have a theory that the movie has a somewhat strong pro-choice message and with the entire plot of.. we had a one night stand and didn't know anything about one another, but got pregnant and fell madly in love.. I hated the movie!!
Everyone I spoke to thought it was funny and cute and all that... but I didn't like it. Sure, it had some funny parts, but I think it was too unrealistic for me or something.
I guess it's possible that it could happen that way... but I would imagine the guy would probably not even be told (if she chose to have the baby) and she would end up raising it on her own. Otherwise, she would have had an abortion.
I think what bothered me most was the assumption that the baby was going to be had regardless and abortion was never even an option... or something. It seemed like they were telling me that's what should always happen, but maybe I am paranoid!
I don't know why I was thinking about this today...

I really liked Knocked Up, but I agree with you...it is very unrealistic. In real life, two people that different would never fall in love. I shouldn't say never, it is possible, but the odds are very unlikely. And I guess I never realized that they never mentioned abortion. I wonder if it was a pro-life movie?

That is my theory, but my boyfriend thinks I am just reading too much into it.

Most Hollywood romance-type movies are unrealistic... boy meets girl under improbable circumstances, wacky events ensure, amazing coincidences take place, etc. Not to mention the fact that even characters who are supposed to be 'unattractive' are better looking than 90% of the real people we all see on the street every day...

You're right, Idlewild. I usually point out how unrealistic most movies are.. perhaps I don't like this one so much because I am oversensitive about the abortion subject.. too opinionated to enjoy the movie, if you will.

For some people abortion isn't an option. Just because they didn't take it into account doesn't mean it's a pro-life message. The movie wasn't supposed to be realistic, it was a comedy.
You're right, if it was realistic the girl wouldn't have told the guy and would probably have gone straight to the clinic and had an abortion. But having that in the movie would have made it too serious therefore defeating the purpose of the movie.
Besides, none of his other work has portrayed any kind of message. His last movie was all about trying to get a 40 year old guy laid!
It's okay to have both sides of the spectrum.

Yeah, you would think somebody would at least ask her about it, to which she would replay "No way!" or something...

Yeah, I know it's not an option for some people, which I understand, but wouldn't they even mention it? I know it's just a movie and unrealistic, just expressing why I didn't particularly like it.

Yes, while I haven't seen the movie, many friends have and they said the same thing, it was too unrealistic, but it was funny. I agree, in reality mostly what happens is the chick would either be raising the child alone or have an abortion.

Hmm... I've got strong enough feelings on the subject, but wishing to leave value calls out of this... It's simply thus, what you're speaking of is the harsh reality of the way it is... the movie was a comedy--light and fluffy, the way we'd often like it to be. Just a thought.

I feel abortion is such a hot topic that most movie producers shy away from those types of topics. I did not see the movie, but I cannot see how someone who had a one night stand all of a sudden fall inlove with the father of the baby. Lets be real they may have fallen in love or thought they were but lets see how they are going to do in a few years. Give or take a few hundred messy diapers, no money, little or no sleep, and then see if they really still love each other.

It's only a movie. Every movie cannot cover every possible permutation.

I thought it was a cute movie- and didn’t put that much thought into it- well at least not as much as you did- I see your point though- I’m not sure they were trying to make that point- but could be- Yeah how often does that happen – 1 night stand- pregnant- end up in love and married- that is why I never did many 1 nighters- wasn’t worth it-

It was a cute movie. Definitely not something that would happen in real life two people so different falling in love. I never thought of them mentioning abortion at all but your right in today's society that word is commomly used.

Hey, yeah I never really thought about that but you're right. They didn't mention abortion at all! I think it may be because it's such a touchy subject for a lot of people and most people are usually either strongly for abortion or totally against it. It's kind of a 50/50 thing. It was realistic in some sense I guess because they did have problems a long the way, but I wonder why they didn't consider all the options. I mean, she obviously didn't like the guy she got knocked up by and in real life I'm sure she would have probably chosen abortion.
