Personally music helps me get into the writing mood. It depends on the song im listening to. I have to be listening to a song that is dicriptive and gives a strong message. For example Concrete Angel by Martina Mcbride inspired me to write this short story. I Let my friends and family members read it and they loved it and it had brought tears to some of their eyes. I also like to listen to Michelle Branch songs while im writing i just find its easier to write while listeining to music. Do any of you feel the same way? And just out of curiosity, if you do, what type of music inspires you to write , or you just prefer to listen to while writing?

Nothing inspires me more than music. I've based entire comic scripts on a single song, and a lot of characters and scenes are heavily inspired by the lyrics or atmosphere of a song.
It really depends on what kind of scene I'm going to write when it comes to what type of music. One character of mine is very suited for emo music, while another needs some techno to be written right. I usually have one or two songs for every character or scene that I write, and then I listen to them furiously while writing. For instance, I had "My Vampire Heart" by Tom McRae on repeat for several hours while writing a short story based on the feelings that song gave me.

I tend to listen to different types of music, depending on the type of scene or subject that I'm writing about. For example, I find stuff lke James Blunt's No Bravery great for writing about combat and other traumatic events.

I usually always have music on in the background regardless of what I'm doing but my inspiration usually comes from being out and about and seeing something that catches my attention. Usually by the time I get home I'll have the whole idea laid out in my head and the writing part then comes very easily.

For me, I tend to pick music that if the story got made into a movie, that would be the type of music that would end up in the soundtrack. At the moment, I have been playing a lot of James Bond movie music. It seems to fit into the action packed urban fantasy that I am currently working on.
