Do you have fans or air conditioning...or neither?

How are you keeping yourself cool during the summer months? Do you prefer one over the other? I prefer fans...while aircon cools down faster it also gets cold and fans make it just cool enough.

I have just had air conditioners installed, and there are also fans installed in the bedrooms upstairs. I love the coolness at the flick of a button.

That must be nice! I wish we could do that, but it would be a waste of money as it is only needed like 2 weeks out of the year here.

We have both ceiling fans and aircon. I don't like using the aircon so much because I get too cold. We live in an apartment setting and our corridor is much colder than my own home. I left our front door open slightly and could feel the cool air coming in yesterday LOL Today its hot and bright outside so the blinds are turned down and I have the ceiling fan going just to circulate the air. My son has seasonal allergies so once in a while I turn the aircon on during the day and night.

He's ok, its mainly a heavy cough he gets early in the morning or in the evening, so when I put the aircon on he feels so much better. I dont know why but. If my husband was home right now, the aircon will be on 24/7. I can't stand the cold.

Oh no, I hope his allergies aren't getting to him too much. My son had a bad allergic reaction to mold that we found was caused from a leak on the 4th floor our our condo building. Thankfully we're able to get it taken care of!

I have both fans and aircon in my house. The aircons are in the bedrooms and I only switch them on at night before sleeping. During the day, I use only the fan to cool down the room and I find that it is sufficient.

That's a good idea to break up when you use them.

we have both. but since air conditioning cost too much on electricity, we had to cut down its use. we limit it when its too hot on afternoons or the early part of evening then turn it off. fans are always in use in our household.

It can be very expensive! I try to only use the fans at night but when my husband comes home from work he's always like "oh it's so hot in here" and automatically turns on every fan in the house.

I have both of them but I perfer fans in summer. When I stay in a room with air conditioning on for a long time,I feel dizzy and my skin is dry.Whats more,it is likely to catch a cold in this kind of room.In terms of fans, its more natural.Besides,I am concerned about the enviroment.Using fans is a good way to save energy and money, prevent global warming in a long term. What do you think?

I completely agree. I'm big on "going green" so aircon isn't exactly something I'd want to use. Fans are okay with me and I only use them at night. Plus I think they are a lot healthier than aircon.

We used to have air conditioners at our old house (which is just beside our new house) but now we only use fans. The house was specially built to follow the natural course of air or wind through the house. So it's cooler, and no need for air conditioning. It's just now I understand why a house needs to have an architect to look over the construction, and when choosing an architect one must be keen enough to understand whether that person has any idea or specialization on air or wind, because if he has none, then you'll end up in a box supported by air conditioners when you don't need it at all. =)

Did you guys design the house to follow that plan? That's great. I live on the bottom floor of a condo unit and it's still very hot!

Yeah, designed it that way because we noticed that there was wind outside the old house but it never got in. So, we talked to the architect on how to use that 'wind'. Whoah, ground floor and still very hot, wow that really describes how hot the weather is out there. It's like an oven. You're being baked. Hehehe.. Are there any windows? Try opening them, warm air comes in? Anyways, just go to the mall then. It's better than spending so much on electricity and energy. =)

We have a/c downstairs and use fans at night upstairs. We do not use the a/c much only briefly when it gets too sticky in the house. We are usually out at the hottest time of the day. I would like to swim every day, like I did when my kids were small. I drink lots of cold water, and shower frequently. How about you.

Yes, drinking lots of cold water and cool showers helps a lot! I love being out in the sun on sunny days just not when it's too hot. I don't want my son getting dehyrdated.

During summer months, I have fans on all day long. I love being in air conditioned rooms, but my metabolism gets very low if I am to sit in a cooled room. I could get fat very easily then. Lol. So I prefer having fans rather than air conditioning.

Wow. That's honestly the first time I have ever heard getting fat as an excuse not to get an air conditioning!! hahaha! Maybe I should tell some of my family this so they will get rid of theirs! :)

In my country (Pakistan) the weather is quite hot and it is really hard to go on without an AC, even if you use a fan it will just give out hot air so we have got an Ac as well as a fan in most of the rooms in our home.

I've never been to Pakistan but I can imagine how hot it can get. I remember in Egypt we had fans but it did the same thing...it just passed along the hot air instead of cool air.

We do not have airconditioner at home. We got 3 fans though but now only 1 is working because i do not know why my sister's hand is such a bad luck, every time she handles the other fan it would get damage soon. And then the other fan got damaged too because i accidentally kicked it while sleeping. It broke hahahahah. In my room back at the other city where i used to work, i got an air con and it was always on at night or during the day when i'm at home. I can sleep much better when it's cold. I like to put an aircon in my room here at home but since we are about to move out in a month or two it would be unwise to do so because it would just add to the bulk of things to move out. but in the future, in our new place i will definitely buy one. I can not stand the heat plus if the PC is on all the it needs and air con so that it wouldn't be so hot.

You kicked it while you were sleeping? haha! How did you manage to do that? We have ours far away and up high....if we didn't my toddler would get to it and try to stick his fingers through the holes and hurt his hand. I'm so afraid that's going to happen!

We have A/C but we dont use it. Cant too costly. So we use fans, lots of them. I have 3 in my room, two for the hamster, one for me. :)) SO yeah we use fans not A/C even though we have it!

Yeah A/C is just too expensive to have running constantly. That's a pretty special hamster to get more fans than you! :)

at home we use fans, whether it's summe ror not..rainy season or cold season here in our country could also be hot so we use fans all thorugh out the year, maybe when I have enough money I'll have an aircon installed in our room, that would be great!!!

That's quite a bit of fan usage, but when you need it - you need it. When I was pregnant during the summer...the fan was on all the time.

We don't have air conditioning at all (as is the case with most residences in Seattle), so we have a couple of fans to help keep us cool. As long as the sun isn't shining on the balcony, we can open it up and put a fan in the doorway to bring in cooler air. If it gets too bad to bear, we'll go to the mall or the movies, or some public place that has air conditioning, and wait for it to cool off in the evening.

Ah, I live in the Seattle area too (Renton actually) but I've noticed that not many people have aircon here. But then again the extreme heat only last a few weeks out of the year.

I have two (2) electric fans in my place. But I do not have air conditioning for various reasons like 1.) It’s quite expensive. 2.) I worry about the additional electricity charge that it would bring and 3.) I can still manage without an air con. I live alone so I really don’t think it is cost efficient to install an A/C. I plan to have a unit installed when the time comes that I really could not bear the heat any longer.

You're right. If you can handle it with the fan, why get air conditioning?

We use an air conditioner and it is on 24/7! Although I could get by just fine with fans, my husband likes the house freezing! I am so use to the cold temperatures that now, every time I step outside, my face turns beat red and I get so hot! I keep telling my husband to turn it off for awhile, especially when it is cool outside, but he refuses. He has to work in the heat all day, so he likes it sooo cold when he comes home.

It's nice when it's cold at night because I like to sleep under a lot of covers but I don't like to be bundled all day. How do you do it?? Just tell him to wear less layers...I'm sure you wouldn't mind! ;)

I have both. But I will only use AC if it is super hot. This is because air conditioning makes me really cold and I don't like that feeling. I prefer to feel the heat and the natural air, as I think it is healthier.

That's why I'm not a big fan of airocn either. I think fans are healthier too, but I don't know for sure!

We used to use fans, but every summer it go so hot that we could not stand it. So a few years ago, my husband went to Sears and had them install an Air conditioner. We usually have it on during the day, but not at night. When we came home from our cruise, the house was so hot in spite of the fact that we had re-insulated the attic. So we turned the air conditioner on and it was much better. I have never tried those that go into windows, but my sister-in-law who had an apartment had on.

Hey that's great that you were able to get one! I do think they help cool down a place quicker than any fan could!

Well right now it isnt that hot its only 50 degrees. But in my room it feels a lot hotter for some reason I guess thats because its right below the attic and right behind the garage. So I have my air condition going on at high speed. I just pray we dont have a lot of hot days during the summer I dont know how im going to last in my room. At my old house I use to stay in the basement where it was cool all the time. Those were the days.

Since our country is very hot we always have to use fan:) Some use aircon. I don't prefer to use aircon because when i go out it's hot i have to adapt the temperature so i will not be sick.. And also if you use aircon the electricity is very high. Nowadays electric bills are very high so we have to cut off our use of electricity:)

Yes, we have both but we used fan more often becuase of the high cost of aircon's electric consumption. We only use aircon when it is too hot and we can no longer stand it. It helps us feel comfortable although we worry aboput our bills. lol
