Birthday parties and High School Musical...

My daughter is 7 years old and will be 8 in October. She is * obsessed* with this movie! Walmart is like walking into HSM central now, they have the clothes, the posters, the school supplies, the cd's & DVD's, bedding, curtains, contests, etc.
Next month the new HSM sequel debuts on the Disney channel and there is now party supplies, the new soundtrack and lots more HSM2 stuff. I have put my foot down at her redecorating her bedroom in all pink HSM gear (that stuff is EXPENSIVE!!) and have said no to just about all of the school supplies stuff since her school list doesn't include binders or notebooks because she's just going into grade 2. (I did allow a pencil case - even THAT was over $3.00!!)
Yesterday she decided (already!) that she wants an HSM birthday cake when her b-day comes up in October. I wasn't allowed to go anywhere else in the store until we went to the bakery and checked to see if they had a HSM cake design kit. Surprise, they had one. LOL They even had a choice of a cake or a bunch of cupcakes pushed together and decorated. The kit even comes with a built-in "gift" of a HSM cd case. I think I'll be getting the cupcakes since whatever is leftover I'll be able to put in the freezer. Cupcakes were a little cheaper too, around $13 for 24 of them and for a 1/4 sheet cake was about $18.
I know that next month when the newest one premieres on Disney channel, I won't be allowed to make any plans for that day - no shopping or appointments are to be scheduled unless it's an emergency. LOL I'll probably have pizza delivered so I won't have to stop to fix supper. (we already have the HSM plates, cups and napkins LOL)
Have you ever had a themed birthday party for your child? How extreme or extravagant did you take it?

No, I never have. I am not an extremist when it comes to media influence. I am wondering if when October comes, if she will be "over" this movie and prefer something else.

Trust me, she won't be. She's been hooked since the first movie came out last year. She also knows there's talk of a 3rd HSM movie for next year so it'll be a while before this wears off. I think her "pre-teen" years have kicked in a little early. LOL

Every year my son has a themed birthday party. I don't find going to the extreme if we can afford it. Last year he had sponge bob and I got all of the items at Wal-mart and saved a ton over what Party City charged. I also got a Pinata for him and an ice cream cake from Baskin-Robins. I am sure this year he will revert to Transformers, Power Rangers or Pirates (themes from years past).
I know how hefty the HSM gear is. My son - he's 8 - loves the show as well. He is spoiled because he gets a new backpack (usually from the Disney store) every year. This year he wanted the HSM set, but I talked him out of it (I didn't want the mean kids to make fun of him, he catches enough grief because he has the oddball friends) and got him the pirates set (backpack & lunch kit) instead. We just got back from Disney and spent $22 on a HSM t-shirt and we had to stand outside in 108 degree weather to see the live Pep Show at MGM studios. I was amazed at the number of boy items they make for the movie. I know the show is aimed primarily at girls so I was thinking we would not find anything (kinda like Kim Possible - who we "met" @ MGM w/Ron Stoppable which was REALLY creepy because they had this 35 year old guy dressed up as Ron talking in a high pitched voice....).
