Movie Popcorn - Why is it so expensive

I don't get it. Four people went to a matinee movie yesterday, tickets were 4.25 each so we spent seventeen dollars on tickets. Then to get really not a whole lot of refreshments cost over $25. I don't understand why it costs so much! Even when there was a dollar theatre in town and you could buy your ticket for $1.00, you would still spend the same money on refreshments that you would in any other theatre. I know I'm not alone in thinking this is ridiculous. Surely the theatres are making money without gouging us for a soda and some popcorn! What do you guys think about this?

think that's just about right. I always bring a big tote. And before we went to movies, we stop by at walmart and buy some snacks and drinks in there. I know it's not allowed but I won't pay $11.00 bucks for popcorn and soda...i know it's huge size, and we can't even finish it. So we just bring what we need in my big tote.

Actually, someone took a cinema to court here in Canada a few years back, and the court decided that the cinema could not stop you from bringing in your own food, since they weren't licenced as a restaurant

I always carry a big tote too, and I usually work on crochet projects during the movie... and if there's some candy and a bottled drink inside so be it. :)

WOW! i had to check where you live to see how you only spend $4.25 for a movie ticket. Even matinee prices in my area are $7. The cheapest theater (which used to be $1.25 for matinee and $1.75 for evening) os now $3 for matinee and $3.75 for evening. i know $25 for refreshments sounds outlandish to you, but in my area that is REALLY inexpensive for 4 people. No, i am NOT saying that is a good price. It disgusts me how much movie tickets cost and then the refreshments (if you choose to get them) on top of it. It's ridiculous! i rarely ever go to movies and when i do, i sneak in a bottle of water or soda rather than paying the prices for the consession stand. i do not snack durring movies, but if i did, i would sneak in a small snack as well.

The theatre I went to has reduced their prices, but the matinee price at the other theatres in town is only 5.25. So that is something to be happy about, no doubt.

When you pay $7 for a movie, the theater gets very little of that. Maybe $1.50 if they're lucky. So movie theaters have to make most of their money from refreshments. That's why they're so high. You wanna blame someone, blame the movie studios and their infinite greed.

Someone deserves some blame without a doubt!

I think you're correct. However, as long as people are willing to pay those over-inflated prices, they will continue to charge them. i suggest you bring in your own refreshments.

Most of the time I do. I was just astonished at the prices yesterday!

I have always asked the same question. I don't understand it either. I think that like everyone else it all boils down to making the ultimate $.I wish that someone would realize that if families could afford to go to the theater and eat, they might go more often. I think it is crazy to think that people don't mind paying such ridiculous prices.

I totally agree. We cannot afford to go to the movie and buy the refreshments. If we do go to the movie which we haven't been since Flicka came out, I take my own refreshments. I just cannot afford those prices. Most of the time we do not go to the movies and wait for the movie to come out on DVD.

The fact is, theaters make little to no profit off the movie itself. Their profit is in the refreshements. The price of refreshments isn't the least over inflated, in fact, they are exactly where they should be. Is there a lot of popcorn and candy laying around week after week? Does drink syrup go bad before it gets sold? NOPE. The price is high because people just can't wait to spend $2.50 on 10 cents worth of popcorn and sodapop.

Usually people like to eating snacks when they watch the movie. So the sellers try to earn much more from it. Anyway, at least you will buy something to eat in the cinema. And since you won't go to see a movie very often, so perhaps you don't mind the refreshments' cost. It's the same for the amusement park. So my way is to bring my own snacks or I won't eat anything in the cinema:)
