Reading the same book again

I like to read the same novels over and over again. It has to be a good novel, obviously. In my case, I really like John Irving and Stephen King. Some of their novels I have read two or three times, like 'The Hotel New Hampshire' or 'The Stand'. I do that particularly when I don't have the time to read a lot, maybe because of work or other things. With a new novel I always feel I miss details when I can't devote enough time to it. On the other hand, there are always new things I discover in a previously read novel. How do feel about this, would you feel strange to read the same novel for the fourth time?

I have read some books so many times the book fell apart and I had to buy another copy. Often in long series like the Anita Blake series, I re-read the books each time a new one comes out. Which means that I have read some of them more than 4 times! Thankfully those I bought in hardback and they are holding up fairly well. Books have always been like friends to me and its good to visit old friends every once in a while.

I have the hardest time rereading something that I have already read. The reason for this is that I have SO MANY things that I want to read and I feel like I am wasting time when I reread. I have friends who absolutely love to reread something they enjoyed and like you, they tell me that they get somethig new from it everytime. I should try it sometime.
I liked "The Hotel New Hampshire" too. I have enjoyed many of Irvings novels. I liked "A Prayer for Owen Meany" as well.

I understand what you are saying..And yes when I re-read a book I do discover new things and then I am like, "so that is why that happened?" Because I missed it the first time, the second time makes sense.....The only book I've read by King is Pet Cemetary...That was 14 years ago...Time to re-read that one....

Funny enough, I never read that one. I must have read 'The Stand' about 5 times. It was one of his first, and when he published it the publisher asked him to 'cut' about 300 pages. 20 years later, and a couple of million dollars heavier, he went back to the publisher, told him to put back those 300 pages, added another 200 and published it the way he wanted.
(Psst, how's that computer going?)

I agree the more times I read a novel the more I seem to get from it. I seem to miss things the first time because I want to see how everything comes out in the end. The next time I can take my time with it because I already know how it will end. Each time I reread a novel I seem to find more details that I missed. I do not think it is strange to read a novel again and again especially if you enjoy the book.

If a book is good I will read it again and again and again. My fiance has a few novels published and they are all absolutely brilliant. I can think of a whole list of books I have read over and over, and that I will continue to read again and again.

Just two or three times?
I have books that I can honestly say I have read at least 20 times or more. The first one that comes to mind is Richard Bach's "Illusions", which I've probably read at least 50 times in the 13 years or so since I first discovered it. There are many other novels that I'm sure I've read close to that many times as well. I often find myself going back to books as if they were old friends when I am in need of comfort.
Stephen King is one of my favorites as well, I started reading his books very young, and I'm sure there are many of them I have reread many times, though I'm not quite as much into them as I was when I was young. My taste has moved a little more from horror towards fantasy over the past few years.
Right now the books that I'm rereading that I've read many times are these kid's books called "The Dark is Rising" series by Susan Cooper. I never read kid's books as a kid, but I discovered that I very much enjoy them as an adult, and I've read these ones (which are aimed at young teenagers) probably at least 20 or 30 times each. Of course I had to interrupt my rereading of that series shortly in order to read the new Harry Potter book though.

I only read the same book again and again when I am studying for my exams. LOL. I never like to do things a second time, same for reading a book. No matter how I like the book, I will not read it again. I may flip to the part where I like and read that portion again, this time to devour the part and imprint it into my head. After that, the book is put away for good.

I like to read books. Sometimes, whenever I am home alone and nothing else to do, once i see my bookshef, I just pick up once of the books and will start reading them especially the Judith Mcnaught / Og mandino ones. I dont care if I have read it several times already but I like to refresh my memory about the events in the story.

I reread the novels I love all the time. In my case, one novel i've actually read maybe for the nth time is "Crime and Punishment" by fyodor dostoyevsky. I dont know but there's something rather hypnotizing about Raskolnikov. Im really big on dark, brooding types. Even if he murdered the old woman, you can still sympathize with his lot, what he's goin through. and he paid back his debt to society in the end. And the other novel I've ead for the nth time also is "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by my favorite writer of all time, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The fictional town of Macondo, and the rise and fall of the Buendia family really draws you into discovering and realizing that what we're reading is nothing less than the slow circle of life.
