ok i am now done with my trial and can talk about it all i want. i was called for jury and actually had to sit on a murder trial. the most stressful part of jury duty is the silence. i mean, here we are just thrown into a court room, this being a new experience for all of us and we have to hear testimony of a horrific crime, we have to view pictures and try to decipher what is truth and what is lie. we are told we have to come up with a verdict for this young boy who was 17 when he committed this crime with a friend. as another juror stated, these guys are bad news. they are classic, grew up in the projects, got into trouble all through elementary and junior high school, were sent to juvie to try to straighten them up, quit school, one was a daddy by the time he was 17 and both drug dealers dealing crack cocaine. they killed a couple of junkies and we had to decide if it was self defense, was it just cold blooded murder, was it a botched robbery, we know it was a drug deal gone awry. we came back with a verdict of 2nd degree murder but the process of the trial was unbelievably heavy for us 12 jurors who are just your average joes on the street. i never want the experience again, yet at the same time i do feel honored that i was able to partake in the judicial system. i now have an appreciation as to why they choose 12 jurors. someones fate must be decided, everyone sees a story differently. making 12 people from various backgrounds not including law come to an unanimous decision was very thoughtful for trying to keep things fair for all involved. we all felt pity for the victims, their families, and even these boys and their families. we all felt anger and fear. in the end we feel that we have provided justice for all involved, at least to the best that is humanly possible.
i just wanted to share this experience with all on mylot :) thanx for reading

This will sound totally nuts, but I would love to do this and if possible, have it be my career :D
I assure you I am not naive, i do deal with extremem circumstance in the counseling i do, but something like this, i would enjoy the thinking and understanding of it all.

some people are called to such work, i know i could never do it on a regular basis. i found it exhausting. i was in bed between 8:30 and 9:30 every night when i'm usually up until 2am. do you want to be a lawyer or a judge?? i actually admired the judge on this case, she was very compassionate, as well as methodical.

I actualy wish to be a psychologist. In truth a Judge would be a wonderful job if you are capable but to be honest, i strugle now having to undertake large amounts of education, most of which i will never use nore retain in order to follow a gifting.
A judge would be so wonderful, but 10 years of my life is alot for something.
I do envy your oppertunity
God Bless
(please excuse my spelling)

Scary isn't it syndibee, and especially if you have children of your own. Sure makes a person wonder. I can not imagine the heavy burdern a child would be carrying knowing full well he or she actually killed another human being. It's an awful situation all the way around. I credit you for being able to take part in this and I'd prefer this type of situation would never happen but we all know it does and will continue. Sad really sad. Take Care...

I actually got selected years ago for a capital murder case but only managed to get through a couple of days. I got ill while serving and the judge had to dismiss me from the case because of being sick. It had to do with a doctor being responsible for their patient killing another family in a car accident. The patient was not supposed to be driving. I would not want to go through a situation like you went through. That had to be a tough case to sit through.

The jury system helps to understand the conditions and circumstances of both the victims relatives and the criminals situation, but the jury is burdened with a hell of a responsibility to come to a right decision. It was a learning experience for you.

when the boredom of sitting in the jury gets to you, start digging your nose and zone out while doing so.

WOW! That is quite the experience. I have never had the chance to do this, and I don't know that I could. It must have been nerve racking to say the least. It couldn't have been an easy decision, seeing the guilty was 17. I am so glad that you had this opportunity to help. Thank you for protecting the innocent. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

we all feel that we can't at some point. one of our jurors really had a hard time with it. friday she wanted to find him not guilty, even though she knew he had committed the crime. she just didn't want to be responsible for this boy going to prison. we all slept on it and thought it over for the weekend and being able to discuss and decide together was a big help.

I can understand how she felt, and being able to talk it over with the rest of you probably helped her make her decision. I am sure if I had to do it I could.

Can you believe that you just took part in this jury? I think that I would have been full of all different kinds of emotions if I were you. I would love to be on a jury, but such a horrible crime and you have to decide what happens to these boys lives. Thanks for sharing this with us. I am sure that you will never forget this experience.

What a hard thing you had to go through, and yes I think it will stay with you the rest of your life. I think that will be one of the hardest things you will have to go through. Could you imanigine sitting on the Scott Peterson trial or the Phil Spector trial. The Scott Peterson trial was horrible to have to see pictures of Lacy's body and the babies body who washed ashore. They never found Lacy's head.
Phil Spector's trial has been going on for months and as far as I know is still going on. I do not know if I can sit for months at a time as a juror.
Pat yourself on the back and say job well done.
I know here in our county they poll the prospective jury to see if they have ever severed on a jury before and if you have they ask if it was crimerial or civial. Depending what they need juriors for they may release you because they feel you have served your time. Lets hope you will not have to do this again.

ugh! you just described a nitemare i have not yet experienced! I am such an emphathist that I would be horrible in such a situation. Like you said, I would be taking into consideration the age,the situation and the families involved..yet all the while knowing there is no good excuse for murder. It would be very tough...they all are victims.
hope i didn't just jinx myself here...if i get called to jury duty ...i will be blaming you.
