Minimum-wage Increase

With the increase in the minimum wage set to go into effect tomorrow, I wonder if it will be enough. The cost of living is so high in most places that people-for the most part-can barely make ends meet. What does this mean to those of you who hold down a regular job? Will it make things a little easier for you? I'd be interested in knowing your thoughts.

I really doubt that things will get any easier for most of the people. The rate of inflation conveniently went up and was in place before the minimum wage increase even started to go through. Everything has gone up in price to an absolute ridiculous amount. Gas prices have went up needlessly, and everything else that is going up in price is being blamed on gas prices. Even the cost of milk is being blamed on the cost of gas. In Florida you almost have to be rich just to get by. The minimum wage increase is going to do very little for people in areas like this. Another problem is all these so called American companies shipping jobs overseas because labor here is more expensive for them. Well of course it is, it has to be. I could go into the reasons why but it has very little to do with this discussion. My point is, with the new increase in minimum wage it may drive more companies out of here and into some other country where these big rich coporate greedy jerks can pay a slave like labor wage instead of paying people for what they are worth. That is something that should apply to any people in any country. So I guess what I'm saying in response to your question is, no.

I think that most people will feel the way that you do, greatwolf. I don't feel like this wage hike will help at all, because, as you said, inflation will eat it all up. I have hear how high the cost of living in some states such as Florida, D.C., and California are. The outsourcing of jobs is ruining the US economy and our lawmakers are too stupid to see it, but, hey, they are making good money themselves.

I don't think it will make a difference. If you are in trouble the little bit extra isn't going to help. Taking the prices down for gas might.

While I don't hold a minimum wage job now, I have in the past. It always seemed to me that all increasing the minimum wage did was make everything else more expensive. So it always felt like losing ground to me.

I am not really sure how it will help for most people. I am currently making about $8 per hour, which is barely enough to survive in my college town. Between rent, bills, food, books and tuition, gas, etc, I'm not really able to save very much, and I'm already working more hours than I should be while also trying to go to school. I imagine that it will at least be somewhat helpful to families that are trying to run on less than $6 an hour right now, but I think that average families need at least $10 per hour to live comfortably in our current economic state...

More money is always a good thing, but the government is STUPID. IF they would stop RAISING the price of fuel, prices on food and everything else wouldn't raise. Then we wouldn't have to have cost of living increases! DERRR... Guess you don't have to be a brainiac to be president... WHY can't a genius run for office? Just once!

Although it will only help some in today's inflation, I think it is something, I mean a 50 cent increase is helpful...
