What should you do if you accidentally post the same discusson as someone else?

I've been here at My Lot for awhile, so I suppose it's possible that I have accidentally repeated some of the same discussion subjects as other members. It's never been purposeful, of course. But, it does happen.
I guess it's inevitable, considering that the news is public property, so more than one person on My Lot is bound to make a comment. I guess that's not really stealing another person's post.
But, sometimes two people do end up with the same idea, except that one person gets around to posting it first.
So, what should you do if you find out that you have accidentally posted the same or similar discussion as another My lot member? Should you ask My Lot staff to delete the post? Should you apologize to the other person?
Should you just ignore it and hope that noone notices the double post?
What would you do if it happened to you?

i wouldn't think that any quality poster would have that kind of problem. maybe the subject matter could be the same. even a part of the details could be the same. but i doubt that it could be 100% the same unless it's just a copy paste.
what makes a similar discussion different is the ability of the poster to provide more details by sharing experiences or giving examples or making a point. if all these three elements are somehow lacking, then similar discussions are bound to be the same.
if the incident of posting similar discussions happen to me, i'd just let it go. i would think that we would probably have different responses anyway... from different friends in our list. :)

You brought up some very relevant and smart points! I am very impressed. I will keep those pointers in mind next time I am posting a new discussion. Thanks. And, drop by anytime. Would love to hear from you again.

It happens with me all the time. I just make some new discussion and then post it and then when it is displayed, i find some more same topics in the similar discussions column. Well i cant help it. Actually no one can help it. The population on mylot is real high. So there is a very slim chance of getting a unique discussion.
But when it happens i just consider myself to be in the category of common people. Lol......i am a common man. I am happy.

It's a good feeling to blend in with the crowd. Better to be one of the crowd, than the one they are laughing at. Common is good!

This is nothing like a normal forum where if you post the same thing your post gets moved, deleted or locked and a scolding comment left! There are so many topics in discussion that I bet there are many repeated topics!

That's very true! I have been to other forums and they are way more strict on duplicate posts. Very very strict! My Lot is more relaxxed about the subject.

Actually till now, i'm still not sure how to search for similar discussion topics, and i'm quite sure in time to come, it will not be possible to not repeat anything. I'm quite sure with the population size and diversity in mylot, the number of discussion topics available in the world will be covered almost totally..haha..
unless someone starts something like "Do you poiuewt or weor? Really? dyf335 right!"

If I can post the same post and they have been made before mine then i cannot do anything to delete it. I just leave it there. I think it is very hard to look up all posts if your posts have similar posts. If the title will be the same that would be I think is excusable. But if the inside especially if the content is long and the same then I would wonder what makes the two posts the same. Someone might have copied it.

First of all are you sure you posted the exact same discussion? Is it the same idea but asked in a different way? If so it is not the same discussion. If you ask if I posted the exact same discussion what would I do? I would ignore it! Except I would state in the comments when and if someone made a comment that I apologize and that there is another discussion the exact same that was posted before mine. What else could you do? Nothing!

ha . this is funny .
but it is very much possible . frankly speaking , i read the question and answer to the discussion . this is very much possible . its because of the topic of discussion . the usual answers can be ( yes ) ( no ) ( not sure ) . and the answer can be extended . so most of the people , can surely have the same answer but it can be in a different sense .
but hey , dont worry , you wont be copying his / her answer , and neither can you copy paste until you are a higher user . and i don't think that mylot should even delete the post . i guess no one should delete the post . but if the other person is repeatedly copying your answer , then he should be warned and then mylot should take a decision . mylot is when you share your personal views

Yes, I have always found that to be true. When you share your own personal view on a topic or discussion it is bound to be completely unique even if the core subject is similar to another person's idea. Very good points you have made. Thanks!

I have done that in past but I found that although the discussion was on the same subject - because of the difference in words - I got entirely different responses than the other discussion so don't worry - as the people responding to the two subjects are different - there is still variety in responses.

It takes a long time for me to start a discussion here on mylot. I usually like to have a discussion that is interesting and unique so it usually takes quite some time to think of one. I also try to do a search first before I begin a discussion to make sure it has not already been started by someone else. A lot of times I find that the discussion I am about to start has already been started by some one else on mylot. So I just drop it and respond to the discussion instead of starting another one. I read in some discussion some time back a member said he/she would report anyone who has a similar discussion to theirs. I think that is not fair because it is possible to make an honest mistake. Except of course the person copies the discussion word for word.

Like I said in my response, if the discussions were posted months apart then there really is no cause for concern, especially if the subject is dated - that is, the answers could have changed in that period of time. However, if someone responds to both posts using a copy and paste of their own response, that is against myLot guidelines.

It happened many times already. I just go on and sometimes same person also respond. That cannot be avoided because we sometimes have the same ideas, the same thinking so it is possible. But if you will note the subject might be the same but not the same text at all. It is not our fault so I dont have to say sorry for those who posted first.

As you said, it's impossible to ensure your discussions are not going to be duplicated with other discussion posts. I know there are several discussions regarding New Year's resolutions. I enjoy those and respond to all of them because I have a very important goal this year that I don't mind sharing on all of those similar discussions. I don't think any two discussions are completely alike, however. Every person has a different thought process. Everyone has a different personality. Different people will list their discussions differently and with different wording and with different intentions. I don't know whether these "identical" discussions are illegal or not. I would say that they aren't, but I'm still learning the rules here. If I saw that someone had a similar discussion to one I'd already posted, I don't know if I would apologize, but I would definitely respond to their discussion. Obviously I thought it was important enough to post myself, so I'd gladly participate in that other person's discussion. This is a very interesting and thought-provoking discussion.

This has only happened to me twice that I know of , luckily it was my friends and they pointed it out but at the same time told me not to worry about it , which was really nice of them ,I usually do a check to see if anyone has done it before , but if they have not had the same actual words it is sometimes really hard to know , I honestly wouldn't worry about it too mush , we are a nice bunch here , if someones does get angry , it this is quite unusual on here , then just apologise and tell the truth ,that you didn't know anyone else had done the same thing , With so many people on here it has to happen some time , xx

Many people does this type of mistake. just do a few search with general topics. You will see many discussions, that are similar to each other. So don't be worry. If no one replies that discussion, probably it would be deleted in a few days.

i mostly try to ignore it .because these type of things happen in our life .by mistake . so, i never think that now no one is going to reponse me. i just see who comes to my discussion and response.

That very same scenario happened to me a few months ago believe it or not! I contacted the person who had started the discussion before me and told her I hadn't realised she had already started that post and I apologised to her! Luckily she totally understood and said that it was fine! I would be reluctant to ask for it to be deleted as anyone who had responded would lose points! xxxx

Hello beautyqueen26!
I think it is quite probable that more than one people start discussions on same topic as many people share many common interests with each other. Just like some novel or movie, war, same gender marriage, abortion and other religious, political and social issues etc. However, many a time, even though topic is same, the theme and perspective or the approach is different which leaves away any idea of plagiarism and such. It may also happens that same type of discussion is started with a difference of some months, in this case I think it's okay to start one, since there could be many things that would have been changed since then. The problem will be when not only the topic is same but also the theme is same too.
I generally try to look around if there have been same type of discussion that I want to start. I would search by tags and will see if my theme is not already spoken about. There is one time when I started a discussion of a type which was already present. It didn't appear when I was searching probably because I looked for wrong type of tag. Anyway the previous discussion was from a friend about 4 months ago, with last response about 3 months before than I started, so I thought it would be okay. At another time, I started a discussion and just after 30 minutes another similar discussion popped up with same theme, but the user that started discussion came to my discussion to apologize and I think it's sufficient to show that person's sincerity. I told him that it is possible that we two thought the same idea at same time. I not only rated that person with a + but also went to his discussion to rate him with a + too there just because I thought that he was sincere.

Hello beautyqueen26,
I don't really think too much about this. When I start to post a discussion, I don't really check whether there is another same discussion like mine or not. But it happens few times that the discussion I started, already done by other members. What I will do is, to respond to another discussion which is same or slightly the same like mine. I just feel good to do so as to make it fair to other members too *smiles* That is my only opinion *winks*
