One of my GS moms had been having a lot of health problems the last few years. She had a hysterectomy and they removed a large tumor. They thought it might be the cause of her back trouble, as it was pressing against her spine.
Yet no it was not that. She has scoliosis. She was fitted for her brace last week. She is so worried about having to wear it, let alone all the other things she will be going through.
Do any of you have any advise or encouragement that I can pass along to her? I know this is a big deal and will change her life drastically. I do not how ever know that much about scoliosis, and do not know what I can do to be supportive and helpful to her. I'd love to give her a great success story!

Hello tammyr!:-)
Though I am an engineer but my partner is from medical sciences and she shares with me a lot, so What I am going to share is just a little second hand knowledge rather information.
Scoliosis is usually 'idiopathic' i.e. it gets growing unnoticed while children are developing it mostly because it's painless while it grows. Scoliosis in adults is usually progression of already existing problem. It can be controlled better in initial stages with the help of 'brace' but if it's not controlled by brace, then surgery is the best option and it's safe and effective too. There are other options too but they haven't been proven very beneficial and effective.
One important thing is that, it grows in families i.e. it's occurrence is more in a family where someone already had this problem. Especially look out for uneven shoulders and waist in children and if a child usually leans to one side. So, it's important that the children in the family of someone having this problem and having above symptoms get examined for it on regular basis so as to check it in initial stage.
I don't think that there is much to worry about as, if 'brace' doesn't work, she can always have a surgery which is mostly effective after all. I hope it helps.

Thank you. I talked to her tonight. i told her to be sure and tell her daughters doctor so they will be watching her for any signs and she will be watching also. She said her brace was not too bad and she actually feels better when she has it on. That is a big relief to her. She was quite worried about it limiting her too much, but seems happy with it.
Thank you again for your words of wisdom.

hello tammyr my niece has scoliosis so i know a little bit about first of all she has to get her mind set about wearing her brace is very important or her spine could curb even more so tell her to look for the perfect timing to wear it, my niece used to wear it the minute she came from school until it was time for her dinner it worked perfect for her because, that was her time to help around the house and to do homework also it help her shape her waist like a model so is not all bad; but the truth of the matter is if she doesn't wear her brace it could get bad so please tell her that the good thing is, that they found out on time enough to be fix by wearing a brace

They made a cast for her brace. She will get it soon. She will have to wear it most of the time if I understood correctly. She is afraid that she will not be able to sit in it. Do they come that far down that she would not be able to sit comfortably.

well yes it comes down enough to feel uncomfortable when she sits down but the truth of the matter is that when she wears the brace is better is she is moving around also for somer it gets very hot and unconfortable probably she could put something under her brace like a slip
