Are Anti Depressants Bad For You?

Well, I have been reading about depression a lot. My mom suffered depression and drank her way out of it. I suffer from depression although I do snap out of it and I don't drink. But I have thought about taking anti-depressants but have stayed away from them because I am afraid to take them. What do you think about anti-depressants? Do they work? Are they addictive?
