One thing I did was start leaving my credit cards at home. That way I had to plan ahead to use them. And when I planned ahead, I often found I could wait for certain items until I had saved the money for them. It certainly helped with impulse buying. Also, I waited for a really good offer to transfer my balance to an account with a lower interest rate.

I went to a local, non-profit debt consolidation company. They lowered interest rates and also took over dealing with the credit card people. It has been nearly 2 years and I have no regrets. My debt will be completely cleared up in another year. If I had gone on as I was, I'd be paying for a lifetime.

Hi ethel, I somewhat understand your situation. We used to have a bunch of credit card debt as well. We slowly but surely got rid of our debt after learning about Dave Ramsey and reading his book The Total Money Makeover. That book has forever changed the way we live.
I highly recommend it. Check at the library and ask if they can get it for you.
It's a long road to get rid of your debt, but there is nothing else more worth doing. Let me know if you need any thing.
