As for me,not a English speaking man,so my english words are limited,so on mylot,I always meet some strange words, and I will look up them in the dictionary and write them down on my notebook, this will help me to improve my English.I am very happy about that.
Do you have the same habit like me?
Or you just guess them form the sentences?

I think it is a great habit for anyone to have. I've read and spoken nothing but English since I started talking, and still always come across words that I don't know the meaning of, and I'm sure I always will. I usually go for the dictionary straight away, so I can really understand what I have just read!

I do look up with the dictionary if I want to know what the word means. Otherwise, I just guess the meaning from the sentence. However, if it is a word I want to use, for sure I will look up the dictionary. I do not want to risk using the wrong word to convey a wrong message.

Though not a native speaker of the English language i feel that I have a large vocabulary to boast of. Because if this, I seldom refer the dictionary to either to select or find meaning of words.

Hi! Good for you... But I think you need to improve on your grammar.
I'm not being Ms. Know-it-all. I'm also not a native speaker, but English is our second language. It's taught to us ever since we started to learn to talk. In school, English is one of the primary subjects.
It's fun to learn new words and increase your vocabulary. At the same time, it's really rewarding to improve also your grammar to be understood well. Peace ^^v

Before, whenever I encounter new word, I even have a hard time spelling them right, espcially when I only heard it from someone, mostly a professor during a discussion in class. I check them out later on whenever I have the time to clarify whatever my professor was trying to say or sometimes, I get the meaning out of the professor's usage in it in a sentence.
Now, I often go online and still encounter words that I am not aware of which makes this Concise Dictionary here on our computer very convenient since whenever I encounter a new word, I just open the application and type it in to see what it means. (^_^ )

I normally first try to figure it out by the sentence but If I am still confused then I will look it up.

Yes, I do look up words on the dictionary often. When I'm reading an e-book, and I encounter a word that I am unfamiliar with or I am not sure as to its meaning, I would look it up on my computer's dictionary. I think I'm that kind of person who is interested in words, like I play bookworm and vocabulary games in my computer, so whenever there's a dictionary available, I look it up. When there isn't, then I try to decipher the meaning through the usage, as you mentioned, but then whenever the word comes to mind again, and a dictionary is available, I look it up. Sometimes even, when I'm feeling extra geeky, I try to look up big words on my computer's dictionary just for fun. LOL, I am such a nerd sometimes!

I also do the same, I write unfamiliar words in my organizer and get their meanings from the dictionary. Usually I get strange or profound words from the lyrics of the songs that I like. If you want to encounter new words from songs ... try Mariah Carey's =)

hi tracy1985. Dictionary is a treasure of words. You can look the meanings, pronunciations and much more in a good dictionary. You are working hard as you are taking help of the dictionary for posting your responses here and also starting them on mylot. My English also not good, as it is not my first language. But I managed to learn it here on mylot. I tried, practiced and become to write my inner self in English. The participants on mylot told me that my English is not bad. They appreciated me and I am still practicing to post my thoughts here on mylot. I am also taking help of dictionary. Dictionary under my use is not in book format. I am using a software dictionary and it is proving very helpful for me.
