My daughter's period.

July 25, 2007 2:50pm CST
My 12 year old daughter started her first period today, and my wife has to go to work tonight. Is 12 years old kinda young? I don't know. Anyway, it is a bittersweet feeling, as I explained to her. Part of me is happy and excited that she is growing up. But another part of me misses the little girl I met when she was 6 years old and we used to go outside and play together. Now, she prefers to play with her friends. Is there anything I should expect tonight? Or is she going to be OK without too much attention from me (I tend to get a bit goofy and embarass her : ) ). Her mother has been working on this with her for months so that my daughter would be prepared.

I'm glad to hear that you guys are hands on about this stuff, especially you dad! I hope that everything went well for both you on your night together and that she was feeling ok. 12 is pretty normal. My mom was 9, I was 11, my daughter was 13 and my aunts were 13 and 17. It all depends on our bodies, with a bit of genetics thrown in for fun. Congrats to your daughter! Good luck to you!

Starting her period at 12 is really normal. What can you expect tonight? I mean if you haven't already been experiencing any irritability from your daughter then she just might be very tired today. Her mood might vary throughout the day. I just say stay away from her. Let her do what she wants. If she comes to you try not to act too weird. Hope this helps.

I do not think 12 is too young. I had mine when i was 10 and my sisters had theirs when they were 12. It should have been much better if her mom was there when the period came. I understand how awkward it is for you to handle since you never had one. Do not worry, she will be ok. =) Congrats your little girl is now a lady.

12 years old is a perfectly normal time for a girl to start mestrating. i started to mestrate when i was ony 8 years old. Your daughter really doesn't need much attention from you. i guarantee she would prefer it from her mother when she gets home. Just make sure things are available for her to take care of it with and give her the privacy she needs. Let her know that if she needs you for anything, that you are there for her to come to. Then let her be. If she needs you, she will go to you.

If your daughter needs something she will ask you or she will call her mom. If mom has been talking to her about this subject then I think she will be OK. The only think I think she might need is a dad to love her and understand her mood swings. You know from now on you will not be right about anything. LOL As far as age, 12 is about the right age. 10-14 is normal age. If a girl does not start her period by the age of 16 then she needs to be seen by a doctor. Just relax dad you will make it through the night and so well she. LOL

12 years old is a normal age, so don't worry. I guess u should just be normal about it so that she won't be too shy or be embarrassed. Regards, Adrienne http://www.e-marketinghub.com http://www.e-marketing-systems.com

How cute :) you are such a loving father. My father never did any explanation on my period, he's embarrassed about it and left it all to the shoulder of my mother. I think if you want to make your daughter comfortable, share with her things that you know about period and how to handle it without any feeling of embarrassment. If you don't know about it in detail, don't just simply tell it to her, she might get the wrong idea and never wanted to share about it in the future with you. I think your wife has done a good job on this and it is okay if you don't want to handle it. This is feminine issue and sometimes we feel it uncomfortable to talk it with a man, unless the man really knows what he's talking about. Anyway, congratulations. Your daughter is a grown up today. In no time, you'll have a son in law. :) Lol! Have a nice day and happy posting!

She is definitely not too young. I was ten. I think it is absolutely wonderful you care so much about how to act. I don't think she would want any extra attention. I didn't want my dad to even know about it, but of course my mom had to tell him. I just think if you treat her as you normally would, she'll feel more comfortable. I commend you on your thoughtfulness. : )

12 years old is not too young an age to have your first period. I got mine when I was 11 years old. I remember I was pretty excited when I got it. I felt I was grown up already! But I had also mixed feelings. I was kind of confused, it didn't feel too comfortable having it. I think it's important that parents coach/prepare their daughter about having their first menstruation. This is a time of being awkward. They need to know what's going on in their body, need to know what to expect so they won't be confused too much.

I don't think it's too young. I had my first period too when I was 12. 12 is such an awkward age for a girl to be in...no longer a little girl..and yet, not quite a teenager. I remember when I was 12, I was so impressionable and erratic. I was also very sensitive. And wanted to be treated more like an "adult" now. Just keep assuring her she's going to be fine and ask her if she's experiencing any pain or if she has any questions about what she's going through. Tell her you may not know all the answers but would be happy to listen to her. It's ok to be goofy and make her laugh but saying things to embarass her or make her blush would not be such a wise thing to do because at this age and also having her first period, it's a big transition and an emotional time for her. I think it's ok to just "be there" for her without hovering over her too much. She'll be fine :) I think it's great that you're being such a hands-on dad.

I believe 12years old is the right age. I got mine at 11years old. It's quite funny how fathers handle these things. Specially that they can't really relate to it. When I got my first period. The whole house gone bezerk! We were living in a house full of relatives (my grandmother's house). I was the eldest granddaughter. So just imagine how many relatives wanted to assist me on my first-day. *LOL* Don't worry she'll get the hang of it soon and you'll see your daughter grows so fast. Good Luck!

Twelve years old is regular to begin the menstrual period. It's just a part of growing up and puberty. Usually, the first time you get it, it doesn't come again until a few months later. She'll just probably consult her mother, so no worries.
