We have carpenter ants living in the ceiling of our kitchen

what does this mean? Are they all over the house or are they in one place? Will we need to move out, will insurance cover our losses or is this just a write off? We spent our life savings on this house. The ants are eating through the wood. We called an exterminator who is coming tomorrow, but he will have to tear out the walls to get at the ants, so doesn't that mean we will have to tear all the walls of our house down?
